Abstract: NewsREEL Multimedia premiers 2018 as part of the MediaEval Benchmarking Initiative. The NewsREEL task combines recommendation algorithms with image and text analysis. Participants must predict engagement with news items based on text snippets and annotated images. Several major German news portals have supplied data. The algorithms are evaluated in terms of precision on unknown data. This paper describes the task and the provided data in detail and explains the applied evaluation approach. The algorithms are evaluated based on Precision and Average-Precision for the top news items.

Infrastructure for the Data Revolution: How OpenAIRE supports the EC’s Open ...OpenAIRE
OpenAIRE2020 is an Open Access (OA) infrastructure for research which supports open scholarly communication and access to the research output of European funded projects. With over five years experience of supporting the European Commission’s OA policies, OpenAIRE now has a key role in supporting the EC’s Horizon 2020 Open Data Pilot. OpenAIRE’s community network works to gather research outputs, highlight the OA mandate, and advance open access initiatives at national levels. It has National Open Access Desks in over 30 countries, and operates a European Helpdesk system for all matters concerning open access, copyright and repository interoperability. At the same time, OpenAIRE harvests metadata information from a network of Open Access repositories, data repositories, aggregators and OA journals. It then enriches this metadata by linking people, publications, datasets, projects and funding streams. This interlinked information – which currently encompasses more than 13 million publications and 12 thousand datasets from more than 6 thousand data sources – helps optimise the research process, increasing research visibility, facilitating data sharing and reuse and enabling the monitoring of research impact. This presentation will outline how an infrastructure like OpenAIRE can help turn OA policy into successful implementation.

The main challenges facing universities and authors in moving to OA for journal articles are achieving compliance, managing costs, and realising the benefits of OA. This session will outline Jisc services that help, from submission of an article, through acceptance, to publication and use. It will show how these services build on existing infrastructure, where possible, to provide a solution that, while tailored to UK circumstances, is more widely applicable.
Aidan Horner spoke about Psychology's Open Science Interest Group at the first Open Data in Practice event at the University of York on 15 November 2018.
How to get your institution ready for open access monographs - Ellen Collins ...Jisc
How ready is your institution for Open Access (OA) monographs? Although excluded from REF2020, there is no doubt that they will be included in the future, indeed you can already publish an OA monograph now. This session will first provide a brief introduction to the OA monograph landscape – what is happening, who is doing what, what models are being explored. It will then look at how institutions are responding to landscape and based on evidence collected through institutional case studies as part of the OAPEN-UK project, present tips for getting your institution ready for OA monographs.
The OAPEN-UK project, funded by AHRC and Jisc is exploring open access monograph publishing in the humanities and social sciences. The institutional case studies included in-depth interviews with Pro-Vice Chancellors of Research, Directors of Research, Grant administrators, Finance Directors, Librarians and Repository Staff and researchers themselves. The session will be presented by Ellen Collins, Research Officer for OAPEN-UK.

Research can be easily disseminated online amongst communities of researchers and interested lay people, via social media for example, and it is clearly beneficial if that research is freely accessible on the open web rather than restricted by subscription access. Evidence suggests that OA can increase traditional citations and, increasingly, developments in alternative or “altmetrics” are enabling online social activity around research to be recorded and measured. This session will explore initiatives in this are at Leeds Beckett in the context of the new HEFCE requirements for OA that come into effect in 2016.

Conclusions
• Strive to provide facts on which to base decisions
(EC, publishers, libraries, funding agencies)
• Key findings so far:
- 90% scientists think OA journals are a good thing
- BUT only 8-10% of articles is in OA journals
- main barriers are lack of funds (40%) and journal
quality/prestige (30%)
• Further analysis of the data ongoing
• Data to be OPEN in January/February
