What is a Safety Champion?
•Safety Champion - A grass roots approach
to injury prevention by personalizing safety
engagement that identifies physical and
behavior safety issues and advocates for
resolution.

Responsibilities- Managers and
Supervisors
•Conducting safety observations and also acting as
Safety Champions.
•Utilize and promote the use of the fleet Safety
Handbook within the observation process.
•Active support of Behavior Based Safety and the
Safety Champion processes by completing BBS
observations and/or Supervisor observations,
encouraging their use, and use of the Job Site
Review cards.
•Promoting the concept of looking out for each other.

Responsibilities- Safety
Professionals
•Same as Managers and Supervisors plus:
•Provide Operating Experience and Rapid Trending
Data as available to Site and Safety Champions
•Ensuring relevant information from the Safety
Committee and BBS Committee are shared with the
Safety Champions.
•Promoting the concept of looking out for each
other.
•Provide additional Safety Training (BBS, OSHA 30,
etc.) as needed.

Responsibilities- Safety
Champion Steering Committee
•Tailor / Update the Safety Champion process as needed for the
Station.
•Meet once a month (Recommend combining this with the BBS
meeting to look at Safety Trends to help determine areas to focus
on.) Increased meetings or discussion groups may be
implemented due to negative trends or increase activities with
increased risk such as Outage periods.
•The Committee is composed of a diverse cross-discipline of
employees and should be led by the Safety Manager or
representative.
•Review ongoing actions of the Safety Committee.
•Recruit new Safety Champions

Responsibilities- Safety
Champions
•Challenging the over reliance on past success of
completing a job safely to not do more in prevention.
•Conducting safety observations utilizing the BBS
process.
•Coaching / Mentoring employees immediately, when
working in an unsafe manner.
•Providing positive reinforcement when they observe an
employee following procedures and working safely.
•Personalizing the Safety message as much as possible
and communication trends. Along with alerting
teammates to changing conditions that could affect
safety (e.g. weather, plant evolutions)

Champions (Continued)
•Sharing Industry, Fleet, and Department Safety OE some
which can be provided by the Safety Department.
•Promoting the concept of looking out for each other.
•Promoting the use of Job Site Review cards and BBS.
•Demonstrating personal accountability for safe work
habits.
•Documenting and/or communicating safety issues
utilizing Supervision and/or Condition Reporting process
along with providing potential solutions if known.

  • 2. 2 • Encourage and develop safety engagement • Obtain universal support for safety initiatives • Make safety the overriding priority • Improve morale and employee involvement in safety What’s in it for me? Safety Champions

  • 4. 4 What is a Safety Champion? •Safety Champion - A grass roots approach to injury prevention by personalizing safety engagement that identifies physical and behavior safety issues and advocates for resolution.
  • 5. 5 Responsibilities- Managers and Supervisors •Conducting safety observations and also acting as Safety Champions. •Utilize and promote the use of the fleet Safety Handbook within the observation process. •Active support of Behavior Based Safety and the Safety Champion processes by completing BBS observations and/or Supervisor observations, encouraging their use, and use of the Job Site Review cards. •Promoting the concept of looking out for each other.
  • 6. 6 Responsibilities- Safety Professionals •Same as Managers and Supervisors plus: •Provide Operating Experience and Rapid Trending Data as available to Site and Safety Champions •Ensuring relevant information from the Safety Committee and BBS Committee are shared with the Safety Champions. •Promoting the concept of looking out for each other. •Provide additional Safety Training (BBS, OSHA 30, etc.) as needed.
  • 7. 7 Responsibilities- Safety Champion Steering Committee •Tailor / Update the Safety Champion process as needed for the Station. •Meet once a month (Recommend combining this with the BBS meeting to look at Safety Trends to help determine areas to focus on.) Increased meetings or discussion groups may be implemented due to negative trends or increase activities with increased risk such as Outage periods. •The Committee is composed of a diverse cross-discipline of employees and should be led by the Safety Manager or representative. •Review ongoing actions of the Safety Committee. •Recruit new Safety Champions
  • 8. 8 Responsibilities- Safety Champions •Challenging the over reliance on past success of completing a job safely to not do more in prevention. •Conducting safety observations utilizing the BBS process. •Coaching / Mentoring employees immediately, when working in an unsafe manner. •Providing positive reinforcement when they observe an employee following procedures and working safely. •Personalizing the Safety message as much as possible and communication trends. Along with alerting teammates to changing conditions that could affect safety (e.g. weather, plant evolutions)
  • 9. 9 Responsibilities- Safety Champions (Continued) •Sharing Industry, Fleet, and Department Safety OE some which can be provided by the Safety Department. •Promoting the concept of looking out for each other. •Promoting the use of Job Site Review cards and BBS. •Demonstrating personal accountability for safe work habits. •Documenting and/or communicating safety issues utilizing Supervision and/or Condition Reporting process along with providing potential solutions if known.
