A presentation at the 'Information Privacy, Security and Forensics in the Digital Age' Symposium - a National Library of Wales / Aberystwyth University event 6th September 2012
Discourse on the public and private spheres in the digital age has aroused much critical commentary and has occasioned a revisioning of the meaning of public and private in the realm of information. Developments in on-line communication and commerce have popularised this debate and the question of what information is, or should be, public and private, is one which reflects the complexity and interconnectivity of personal and public personas.
In exploring the perceived potential for transparency and accountability, finding the balance between consumerism and control, collaboration and cyber security, and in developing communities of trust whilst being mindful of compliance and continuous enforcement is a challenge which benefits from interdisciplinary approaches. This symposium explores the boundaries of public and private in the digital ecology and includes contributions from a diverse range of fields: forensics, security, law, information and archival science, and social and mobile media.
There has been unprecedented activity in this area in the second decade of this millennium, culminating in a proclamation by the United Nations on access to the Internet as a human right, the deliberations of the Leveson Enquiry regarding press standards and surveillance culture and EU e-privacy and data protection reform, to name a few.

Reconciling Humanities and Social Science Research With Data ProtectionDavid Erdos
Humanities and social science research contribute enormously to collective public knowledge and discussion. Such activity will almost invariably involve the processing of personal information and will, therefore, trigger the application of EU data protection law including the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This presentation argues that the GDPR’s default provisions – especially as regards the presumption of consent for sensitive data, data subject notification rules and strict discipline provisions – pose an acute threat to such activity. Moreover, whilst the research derogations (Art. 89) ameliorate a few of the issues, they are principally designed for work based on a highly structured, predetermined and largely fiduciary model such as is common in bio-medicine. As recognised by a wide variety of research organizations during debate on the GDPR (including the Wellcome Trust and UK Economic and Social Research Council), given that social/humanities scholarship is intrinsically linked to public knowledge and discussion, it should in fact benefit not just from these research derogations but also from the more permissive (but not absolute) derogations for free speech. The GDPR now recognises this but granting free speech protection for “academic expression” alongside that of journalism, literature and art (Art. 85 (2)). (N.B. These slides are based on a talk given at the University of Hong Kong “Positioning Privacy and Transparency in Data-intensive Research and Data-drive Regulation” on 8 November 2016).

Does your company adequately manage and control the Data Life Cycle? Are you aware of European Privacy fines? Did the Target security breach that emanated through a 3rd party worry you and make you wonder about where to start?
This year I had the opportunity to give a presentation at the World Bank in Washington DC during one of their "brown bag sessions", focused on Privacy, Drones and IoT.
The World Bank is an organization that works worldwide with a wide range of projects, including some initiatives connected with new technologies, and every time, they should evaluate different risks involved, including privacy risks.
The purpose of the presentation was to understand the concept of ‘privacy’ and its different meanings worldwide, how to define the privacy framework and assess the risks arising from the use of new technologies such as drones or IoT, and introduce the Privacy Impact Assessment as an effective tool that we can use in any jurisdiction.
I am going to share some thoughts of these broad and complex chapters that I had to sum up within one hour in this presentation!

A series of discrimination lawsuits brought against hospitality industry businesses under state public accommodation discrimination laws highlight the ways in which some state’s laws afford protection to a broader range of protected groups than those covered by federal law. Given the relatively recent advent of legalized same-sex marriage and civil unions under some state laws, hospitality industry businesses need to ensure they are compliant with the relevant anti-discrimination laws in their respective states. In addition, research demonstrates a positive economic impact on wedding related spending in states permitting same-sex marriage and civil unions with a significant portion of that spending going to hospitality industry businesses for wedding related tourism.

HospitalityLawyer.com | Stephen Barth in Lodging Hospitality Magazine Article...HospitalityLawyer.com
Despite the Department of Justice’s May 24 clarification and the looming Jan. 31 deadline for the installation of fixed pool lifts to existing pools, the hotel industry remains largely quiet on the issue. Two of the largest lift manufacturers say orders came to a halt early this year, and they’re only now starting to pick up again. And most hotel owners, management companies and franchisors declined comment on this suddenly hot-button issue, citing either a lack of knowledge or fear of becoming a target.
The dispute came to a head in July when a coalition of disability rights organizations launched a national boycott and awareness campaign against the hotels and chains represented on the boards of the American Hotel & Lodging Association and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, the industry’s leading lobbying groups. The AH&LA says it is working to educate its members on the law and how to comply, but it also hopes to keep educating Congress and the DOJ on its position that portable lifts would be a better solution.
It’s the latter part that has disability rights advocates up in arms. They see the continued resistance and legislative efforts to change the law or to limit the DOJ’s abilities to enforce the law as an effort to roll back the 1990 Americans With Disabilities Act.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
