An Invitation to Military Airlift and
Air-to-Air Refuelling 2018
Dear Colleagues,
The appetite for participating at the 19th annual Military Airlift Air-to-
Air Refuelling conference has been so overwhelming that we have
introduced a pre-conference focus day, concentrating on Air-to-Air
Refuelling, while the two following days will address strategic and tactical
airlift as well as humanitarian aid.
The return of Russia to the East as a strategic adversary as well as the
instability to the South and South-East of Europe makes NATO and EU
forces refocus on territorial defence. In addition, European Air Forces are
faced with a tight budgetary situation, costly investment programmes
(fighter replacement, A400M, tankers, etc.), but also shrinking human
resources which makes them concentrate on core business, which is
fighting. Nevertheless, for many there is a transition to new airlift and tanker
aircraft, which implies new challenges.
Therefore, having this yearly SMi Military Airlift Air-to-Air Refuelling
conference bringing together military experts, agencies and organizations
alongside with leading industry solution providers is a must to discuss
how solution can be found to allow the military to innovate and to face
difficulties as well as to continue delivering the required services to the
Armed Forces.
Having attended this SMi conference for the last ten years, I firmly believe
it is the best one held in Europe and the perfect environment for discussion
and networking. Hence, I am honoured to be able to chair it for the fourth
time in a row.
May I ask you to pay particular attention to the conference agenda
which has been put together with great care to give you the very best
opportunity to benchmark and learn from subject matter experts. SMi has
invited the most senior and well-respected Commanders of Air Transport
bases, Heads of Air Mobility organizations and agencies, and this seniority
is a demonstration of the support for this critical meeting. I am looking
forward to meeting you in December in Rome with many other like-
minded individuals to ensure you too can benefit from this unique event.
Yours Sincerely,
		 Laurent Donnet,
		 Managing Director,
		 Avidonn Consulting,
		 Conference Chairman

Air-to-Air Refuelling Focus Day
09.00 – 18.00 | 3rd December 2018 | Crowne Plaza St Peters Hotel, Rome, Italy
Chaired by Mr Laurent Donnet, Managing Director, Avidonn Consulting
The need to deploy forces on protracted operations has become a
mainstay for defence forces attempting to project global influence.
Whether extending flight time to maximise strike time for combat
aircraft or to enable rapid and flexible deployment of troops and
materiel tanking is now a fundamental competence for all Air Forces.
With this in mind, SMi Group are proud to announce an additional
focused day of content looking exclusively at Air-to-Air Refuelling
within the 19th annual Military Airlift meeting in Rome. Analysing
Automatic Air-to-Air Refuelling (A3), interoperability standards among
allied nations, feedback from operational experience and appraisals
on the next generation of AAR technologies – this forum is set to
provide essential updates on this critical force multiplier.

equipment, system / asset monitoring, maintenance, baggage handling system controls and service, and military ground support equipment. A single
source supplier for a wide range of aviation related equipment and services.

including the F35 with its 270VDC requirements. JetAire® military conditioned air units include high pressure/extreme ambient (140ºF) air units for fighters,
compressed air carts, bleed air carts, and lower pressure conditioned air carts for cargo aircraft. Products are available as diesel powered towable
carts, in hangar-based fixed applications, and as carts offering combinations of conditioned air and power.
JBT offers an expanding line of military ground support equipment with the recent acquisition of AMSS (UK). AMSS supplies military loaders, maintenance
staging and coolers for rotary and fighter aircraft including the Typhoon fighter.
Military ground support equipment includes pallet and cargo loaders, deicers, and pushback/tow tractors. JBT supplies the Halvorsen 3 pallet (25k)
loader to the USAF and other militaries as well as the Atlas 4 and 5 pallet (40k, 50k) high-lift loaders. These are air-transportable, high-lift loaders capable
of servicing C130s up to B747 cargo aircraft.
JBT offers the AgileAir, a replacement for the aging Dash60 and C10 power and air carts (A/M32A-60, A/M31C-10). A single diesel powered cart, the
AgileAir supplies three capabilities - conditioned air, bleed air and electrical power – doing so in less space, with a fraction of the fuel, and with much
quieter operations. Reduce your logistics footprint with AgileAir.
For more than 50 years, JBT® has been the name relied on for the very best in commercial and military AGE and tarmac related products and services.

SHZ Aviation is a specialty finance company, providing leasing type solutions for military and other special mission aircraft. We use financing tools
that have been developed and perfected for over four decades within the world of commercial aviation, and apply them, with the appropriate
modifications, to the unique world of military aviation.
Our hallmark is creativity and financial flexibility, which enables us to tailor every transaction to the specific requirements of each operator.
Our approach is particularly relevant for the financing of military cargo aircraft, trainers, air refueling tankers, ISR and maritime patrol aircraft, enabling
OEMs to sell their products, without requiring their clients to pay the entire acquisition cost upfront. Additionally, through the execution of sale/leaseback
transactions, we may acquire used aircraft and lease them back to their existing operators, thereby freeing up capital which could be used for
maintenance purposes or for acquisitions.

  • 2. military airlift and air-to-air refuelling www.military-airlift.com Register online at www.military-airlift.com BOOK BY JULY 31ST AND SAVE £400 ● BOOK BY SEPTEMBER 28TH AND SAVE £300 ● BOOK BY OCTOBER 31ST AND SAVE £100 An Invitation to Military Airlift and Air-to-Air Refuelling 2018 Dear Colleagues, The appetite for participating at the 19th annual Military Airlift Air-to- Air Refuelling conference has been so overwhelming that we have introduced a pre-conference focus day, concentrating on Air-to-Air Refuelling, while the two following days will address strategic and tactical airlift as well as humanitarian aid. The return of Russia to the East as a strategic adversary as well as the instability to the South and South-East of Europe makes NATO and EU forces refocus on territorial defence. In addition, European Air Forces are faced with a tight budgetary situation, costly investment programmes (fighter replacement, A400M, tankers, etc.), but also shrinking human resources which makes them concentrate on core business, which is fighting. Nevertheless, for many there is a transition to new airlift and tanker aircraft, which implies new challenges. Therefore, having this yearly SMi Military Airlift Air-to-Air Refuelling conference bringing together military experts, agencies and organizations alongside with leading industry solution providers is a must to discuss how solution can be found to allow the military to innovate and to face difficulties as well as to continue delivering the required services to the Armed Forces. Having attended this SMi conference for the last ten years, I firmly believe it is the best one held in Europe and the perfect environment for discussion and networking. Hence, I am honoured to be able to chair it for the fourth time in a row. May I ask you to pay particular attention to the conference agenda which has been put together with great care to give you the very best opportunity to benchmark and learn from subject matter experts. SMi has invited the most senior and well-respected Commanders of Air Transport bases, Heads of Air Mobility organizations and agencies, and this seniority is a demonstration of the support for this critical meeting. I am looking forward to meeting you in December in Rome with many other like- minded individuals to ensure you too can benefit from this unique event. Yours Sincerely, Laurent Donnet, Managing Director, Avidonn Consulting, Conference Chairman *Subject to Final Confirmation This Year’s Speakers from Military, Procurement and Defence Research Major General (Select) Laurent Marboeuf, Senior Officer, European Air Transport Command Air Vice Marshall David Cooper, Officer Commanding No.2 Group, Royal Air Force* Major General Nicola Lanza de Cristoforis, Deputy Commander, Italian Joint Operations HQ, Italian Air Force* Colonel Eric Herbaut, Director, Movement Coordination Centre Europe (MCCE) Colonel James Sparrow, Vice Commander of the Strategic Airlift Capability, Heavy Airlift Wing Colonel Chris Amrahein, Commander, 100th Air Refuelling Wing, US Air Force* Colonel Olivier Fabre, Incoming Air Mobility Commander, French Air Force Colonel Giuseppe Addesa, Incoming Commanding Officer 14th Wing, Italian Air Force* Group Captain David Akrong, Commander, Continental Movement Coordination Centre Lieutenant Colonel Alexander von Lengriesser, Deputy to Commander, European Tactical Airlift Centre Lieutenant Colonel Sten Arve, Head of Quality Assurance TE, Swedish Air Force Mr Andrew Ellson, Cockpit and Operations Officer, A400M Programme Division, OCCAR Industry Speakers Mr Ioannis Papachristofilou, Head of Marketing, Airbus Defence Space Mr Matias Magnasco, Corporate Account Manager, JETEX Mr Phil Chacon, Business Development Lead, Viasat Mr Colin Sage, Business Development, Viasat Mr Scott B Gwilliam, Global Business Manager, JBTC
  • 3. military airlift and air-to-air refuelling Pre Conference Focus Day | 3rd December 2018 www.military-airlift.com Air-to-Air Refuelling Focus Day 09.00 – 18.00 | 3rd December 2018 | Crowne Plaza St Peters Hotel, Rome, Italy Chaired by Mr Laurent Donnet, Managing Director, Avidonn Consulting The need to deploy forces on protracted operations has become a mainstay for defence forces attempting to project global influence.
