This document provides instructions and examples for solving equations and inequalities related to fifth grade math. It includes examples of writing and solving different types of equations, including ones with variables to represent unknown values. Students are directed to show their work, check their solutions, and write word problems to match given equations. The last few problems involve writing and solving inequalities, identifying an inequality for a given situation, and selecting all necessary steps to prepare for a math test.
5. JR scored 7 more points than Mikey.
Mikey scored 24 points. Write an
equation and solve it to find the
number of point JR scored.
M = 24 + 7
M = 31 points
(You need to write an EQUATION with an equal sign!!)
5
(Show your units!! In this case POINTS)
6. Solve the following equation. Show
your work!
-13x = 52
X=-4
Show your work!
Divide BOTH SIDES by -13
6
7. Solve the following equation. CHECK
your work with a “proper check”!
T + 23 = - 56
T = - 79
T + 23 = - 56
(-79) + 23 = - 56
Subtract 23 from 79 and give the sign of the higher absolute value…
-56 = -56

9. John had 152 baseball cards in his
collection. After receiving the same
amount of cards from both his uncle and
his grandfather for Christmas he has 212
cards. Write and solve an equation to find
how many cards his grandfather give him?
2x + 152 = 212
His grandfather gave him 35 cards.
Note that it is “2X” because his uncle AND
his grandfather gave him the same amount
of cards!!

10. Solve the following equation. CHECK
your work!
-8T – 12 = 44
T = -7
10
Check:
-8T – 12 = 44
-8(-7) – 12 = 44
56 – 12 = 44
44 = 44
12. Write a real life word problem to match
the following equation. Define the
variable and what it represents.
15 X + 30 = 105
Tom paid $15 per ticket for admission to the amusement
park and paid $30 for parking their car. The total bill was
$105. How many tickets did Tom purchase?
Bill earns $15 per lawn that he cuts. He has saved $30
this week and needs a total of $105 to purchase a new
bicycle. How many lawns does he need to cut so he can
purchase the bicycle?

13. Sarah went to the grocery store and
bought two jars of spaghetti sauce and
five boxes of pasta. Each jar of sauce
costs $3.50 and Sarah spent a total of
$10.90. Write an equation and solve for
the cost on one box of pasta.
5B + 7 = 10.90
Check: 5(0.78) + 7 = 10.90
Each box “B” costs $0.79
3.90 +7 = 10.90
(Note: 2 jars = 2($3.50) = $7
10.90 = 10.90

19. Before the next chapter test,
I need to do the following:
a) Complete ALL Practice Tests
b) Ask for help if needed
c) Create Flashcards
d) Get a good nights sleep!
e) All of the above
