The SmartAgriHubs initiative aims to enhance the digital transformation of the European agri-food sector by building a comprehensive network of Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) across all EU regions. Key objectives include fostering multi-actor innovation experiments, securing financial support, and ensuring long-term sustainability of projects. The initiative has mobilized additional funding, introduced new digital solutions, and established numerous innovation experiments in various agricultural sectors.

- #2 Hi My name is Hazel Williams, to day I am going to talk to you about Smart Agri Hubs. This project was launched in late 2018, with a plan to digitalise the Agri-Food Sector in Europe.
- #3 As part of the overall project, there are 9 Regional Clusters across Europe and I, along with Evi Arachoviti are the representives for Ireland and the UK. Some of the regional clusters include: RC Scandinavia RC France RC Iberia RC Italy and Malta RC South-East Europe RC Central Europe RC North-East Europe RC North-West Europe
- #4 The main objective of the overall project is to Consolidate and foster an EU Wide network of Ag Digital Innovation Hubs, in doing this we will bring together regional and sector specific expertise, alongside technology expertise and Business supports – all of these points of contact will be delivered through an information portal known as Smart Agri Hubs- This portal is due to be live by the end of this year. In turn the distribution of this information will be key in creating the digital transformation of the Agri Food Sector
- #5 Our specific objectives are to build a network of multi-actors that will support the future of the AgriFood Technologies. The aim is to create long term sustainability of this network, and in turn bring about innovation at an accelerated pace. We will be building out a series of multi actor Innovation Experiments, which will be funded through the open calls which are due to come on stream in early 2020, with additional financial supports coming from 3rd parties through various private/public funds. 75% of the fund will be attributed to SME’s. More on this later. As part of the overall project Smart Agri Hubs will Map available Digital Technologies across the EU, that can be made readily available to all parties working in the Agri Sector to bring about innovation and market ready products that will impact this sector.
- #6 There are 5 basic concepts of Smart Agri Hubs, 1. The Digital Innovation Hubs 2. The Innovation Experiments – These are projects that will be funded under open calls. We are aiming for an addition 70 projects as part of the overall project. 3. Competence Centres 4. Innovation Portal – which will be live by the year end, and everyone registered will have access to it. The information here will be a key component to ensure the digitalisation of the AgriFood Sector in Europe by building out the network. 5. The Innovation service maturity model, which will help DIH mature and competence centre transfer into DIHs in time. To look at one element of this in detail – lets take the competence centres: Smart Agri Hubs will develop a Competence Centre Catalogue: Profiling of each centre to identify their competence, while also carrying out a ‘white spot’ analysis, to ID new knowledge exchanges and business opportunities with other Competence Centre’s that are not traditional working in the Agri sector. We will coordinate and manage the network of Competence Centre, to ensure they meet the challenges, which will satisfy the needs ID’ed by DIH and their users. We will support Competence Centre’s in their Management towards the future: They will assist in ID’ing synergies and efficiencies among Competence Centre’s in both the agri and non-agri sectors and their network of users. We will Create a ‘best practice’ of knowledge exchange and sharing of information within the digital Competence Centres community. It is hoped that there will be over 2,000 CC listed as part of the overall project.
- #7 What is a digital innovation hub? A Digital Innovation Hub, orchestrate various players outside the DIH, that in turn delivers several different services to the actors in the sector. Ultimately, this should result in newly, funded Innovation Experiments, where several of these players collaborate together on digital innovations resulting in Innovation Experiments that can be funded under the open calls from Smart Agri Hubs. . Digital Innovation Hubs can assist in facilitating the orchestration of the process to apply for the Open Calls, assist in the setup of innovation experiments and in the creation of consortiums to under take an Innovation Experiment The Digital Innovation Hub itself can also participate and execute innovation experiments as part of a consortium.
- #8 How do the services of a DIH work? An example of this would be: A bright start-up has a splendid data-driven product that is expected to help farmers to improve crop disease management. They currently only have a prototype that needs to be upgraded to a real, marketable product. This can be undertaken as part of an innovation experiment. They knock on the door of the Digital Innovation Hub for help. The Digital Innovation Hub then uses its network of farmers and cooperatives to get end-users interested in the experiment and to validate the product. There’s also a need for an appropriate data infrastructure that is robust and will compliant the state-of-the-art security standards required for this product. The Digital Innovation Hub brings in their knowledge and network of ICT researchers and companies to advise on the right infrastructure for this product. The DIH assists in matchmaking within their network of public and private funders to find the financial resources to carry out the innovation experiment and bring the product to market. They help the start-up to establish a multi-actor network, that will assist in writing up a high-quality project plan. Some Digital Innovation Hubs are in a position to deliver services such as a data management plans, and another elements that will be required by this Start Up. Finally the innovation experiment is conducted and The Digital Innovation Hub helps by connecting the right data scientists from the correct source to analyse the data received. Potentially, as time passes, SAH would hope that The Digital Innovation Hubs of the future, can also have this function for and leverage other DIHs right across Europe. Meanwhile, as the list of Competence Centers grow, they over time will mature into DIH’s.

- #10 What a large undertaking over the coming 3 years! Myself and Evi will be undertaking this task, as we represent Ireland and the UK for the coming 3 years. At present, we are developing and building up our connection with the DIH’s that we have idenitfied in our region – we began with 14 identified across Ireland and the UK. We are currently validating them and seeking new DIH’s and Competence Centres to join our growing list. Sectors that we currently have covered Arable; fruits Greenhouses, Dairy, Vegetables; Poultry; organic; Horticulture 2-3 DIH’s with sustainable level of maturity; ~7 organisations have established with critical mass; We have two flagship innovation experiments as part of our regional cluster. We have also began monitoring our region for funding schemes and as part of the Smart Agri Hubs. Please do let us know if you having a funding call coming up and we can disseminate the information out to all of our partners, in Ireland, Uk and across Europe. SAH itself, will have 3 open calls over the coming years each valued at 2million, a total of 6 million will be distributed across Europe. 75% of the funded project will go directly to the SME. The first of these calls is due to open early next year. Today’s round table discussions are the first of a series of events to take place in order to gain an insight and understanding of what our needs within our region are, to best leverage the funding that will be coming on stream.
- #11 What is Smart Agri Hubs in Numbers. Eco System – as I said earlier there are over 100 partners in the consortium, however within our regional network so far there are over 250 partners identified, we know this is only tipping the iceberg. 28 flagship innovation experiments, which started out with the project inception. These experiments will expand to 70 + New innovation experiments, though open calls valued at 6 million euros. We currently have 140 DIH’s identified across EU, some of which are mature, others will mature in time. 9 Regional Cluster Leader and Co Leaders – working to bring this network of people together in order to digitise the Agri-Food sector in Europe. What is the IMPACT: It is estimated there will be 30 million additional funding brought into the sector, 80 new digital solutions on the market and 2 million farms engaged with.
- #12 As I said earlier, As part of the overall project, we secured two Flagship experiments Farm Sustainability Audit (lead by Teagasc) Sustainability tool for remote assessment and management of farmland – STREAM (lead by Teasgac)
- #13 This Flagship Innovation Experiment looks at the automation of farmland habitat reports. This will use integration of data sets and captured images to detail the farm land, while AI will automatically classify the farmland habitat. It will be deployed on 300 farms in Ireland. John Finn in Teagasc, the lead on the project, the other partners are Bordbia, TSSG, CodePlus and FERS. The only country involved in this Flagship Innovation experiment, is Ireland, however you can have multiply countries involved in your innovation experiment.
- #14 To give you an example of some of the flagship Innovation Experiments that are been undertaken across Europe – by sector: Vegetables, Fruits, Aquaculture, arable, piggery farming, and livestock. Details of all of the Flagship Innovation Experiments can be found on the SAH website.
