SMART TEXTILES
• Smart textiles are electronic textiles which are able to perform some
actions in respond to the environment.
• Smart fabrics are intelligent systems that can observe or
communicate ambient circumstances and detect and process
the wearer’s state.
• The term “smart material” was coined for the first time in 1989 in
Japan.
CATEGORIES IN SMART
TEXTILES
• AESTHETIC SMART FABRICS:
Aesthetic smart textiles are those that use technology for fashion and design
purposes. Having the possibility of adding a multisensorial experience, through
lighting, sounds, etc. Examples include sneakers that light up and fabrics that
change color with body heat.
• PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT:
Performance-enhancing smart fabrics provide the user with a unique
experience, dependent on their purpose. This includes body temperature
regulation, reducing wind and water resistance, guarding against radiation,
minimizing the effects of space travel, etc.

TYPES OF SMART FABRICS
• Passive smart fabric textiles can only perceive changes or stimuli in the
external environment, but cannot adjust themselves according to
external changes. They are the first generation of smart fabric textiles.
PASSIVE FABRIC
• They use actuators and sensors which work on electricity to adapt and
modify according to the environment. These fabrics can alter shape,
store and control heat and perform the function
ACTIVE FABRIC
• It is made up of a unit that functions similarly to a brain, with
cognition, reasoning, and activation capabilities.

WORKING OF SMART TEXTILE IN
ENVIRONMENT
1. Sensors– It capture parameter from the environment
2. Data Processing– It is required when active processing is necessary
3. Actuators– It respond by the resulting function of sensor
4. Stimulation – It is found from the environment
5. Giving Response– From the actuators it gives response

APPLICATIONS OF SMARTTEXTILES
• Health care:
The development of wearable monitoring systems is already having an effect
on healthcare in the form of Telemedicine.
• Life belt
Basically, life belt is a trans-abdominal wearable device. To avoid the
frequent visit of additional patients remote health monitoring is provided by
this.
• Defense
Smart textile is also used for defense. In extreme conditions or situations
there is a need for real time information technology to increase the
protection and survivability of the people working in those conditions.
• Life Jacket
Like life belt life jacket is also a medical device which always monitoring
blood pressure or the heart rate. All the information is transferred to a
computer and which is read by a medical staff.
• Entertainment Wear
These types of wear have special color, heat and light consuming power.
These wears have special effect when the dancer moves.
• For textile sector smart textiles, is promoting a good strengthen position
internationally and create new job opportunities .
