3. Introduction
Lyndsay Williams of Microsoft Research's Cambridge UK lab is the inventor of
the Smart Quill .
It is a pen that can remember the words .
It is used to write, and then transform them into computer text.
Users don't have to write on a special pad in order to record what they
write.
User could use any surface for writing such as paper, tablet, screen or even
air.
People could use the pen in the office to replace a keyboard.
4. The estimated cost of this futuristic pen is around $200
Smart Quill brought to the market in 2011.
7. Users can enter information into these applications by pushing a button on the
pen and writing down what they would like to enter .
Handwritten notes are stored on hard disk of the pen. The pen is then plugged
into an electronic "inkwell", text data is transmitted to a desktop computer,
printer, or modem or to a mobile telephone to send files electronically.
There is also a small three-line screen to read the information stored in the
pen.

10. There are two techniques used for this
purpose:
Accelerometer
Hand Recognition Software
11. Accelerometer
This technology uses a device called Accelerometer which is used for measuring
motion.
Accelerometer that monitors hand movements
A tiny accelerometer in a pen that could be used to detect the starts and stops,
arcs and loops of the hand writing and transmit this information to the
microcontroller and it would make sense of it as text.
12. User can train the pen to recognize particular handwriting.
Handwriting Recognition and
Signature Verification
If Someone else tries to pick up your Smart Quill and try to write with it won’t be.
13. HANDWRITING
RECOGNITION SOFTWARE
This software embedded in the microprocessor of the pen is used to recognize
handwriting of the user.
Pen works in conjunction with a regular PC on to which users install special
handwriting recognition software.
The handwriting recognition software translates movements in to text on screen.
14. DISPLAY SCROLLS BY TILTING SCREEN
By tilting the pen, user can choose applications and scroll through without
using scroll buttons.
Smart Quill could also scroll through pages of display by tilting it in the hand and
power off if no hand movement was detected.
15. The text written can be read on a tiny screen on the side of the pen and its has a
light at its tip which allow the user to use it even dark.
16. When the pen is kept idle for some time, power gets automatically off.
Handwriting recognition .
Signature verification .
It have ability to store data.
It have power (Battery Life).
Communication with other devices.
Accelerometer Technology is used.
People could use the pen in the office to replace a keyboard .
18. Password by signature recognition.
Movements are stored within the Smart Quill. So there is no chance of
stealing the data.
When the pen is kept idle for some time, power gets automatically off
Smart Quill pens are trained to recognize only the owner's handwriting, making
it a valuable security tool.
19. Smart Quill has 8MB EEPROM memory.
At a time up to 10 pages of notes can be stored locally on the pen.
The data is stored in the memory on the pen until it is uploaded to the
personal computer.
20. Smart Quill is powered by AAA battery.
Run for 25 hours on single battery.
The pen exhibits automatic power on/off system.
21. Smart quill can also read on any flat surface (not only on paper).
It is password protected.
Highly convenient and portable.
It can link to modems, printer etc.
Easily Movable.
Supports automatic on/off system.
People could use the pen in the office to replace a keyboard .
22. It is inconvenient for the persons with hand tremors.
Bigger size than normal pen.
It is expensive.
If a person forgot his/her signature then may comes in trouble.
23. It contains an ink cartridge so that users can see what they write on paper.
The information stored in the pen can be input to other devices such as
mobile phones, printers, modems, desktop computers etc. for different
applications.
It also provides handheld computer applications such as digital diary,
contacts, calculators etc.
Smart Quill synchronizes files, e-mails and messages to PC
24. Conclusion
Smart Quill supports two factors :
• Small size
• Convenient use.
The future of Smart Quill ensures all computation power the user needs right
inside the pen.
Reducing the size of handheld computers can only be taken so far before they
become unusable. Keyboards become so tiny you require needle-like fingers to
operate them and screens that need constant cursor controls to read simple
text.
25. It can be developed for cursive writings and traditional languages.
Reduction of size.
Cost reduction.
