- 1- Thank you for hosting me in this event , I am Amr Abbas ……. 2- After what we have seen, in the previous sessions & presentations, I would like to add a new dimension for how we see smart cities through this presentation (Geoenabling Smart Cities) or let me say (Adding the missing dimension (GIS) to smart cities)
- Cities around the world are Aspiring & Trying there best to be smarter (lets say to be ready for the future) , They want to be more sustainable, more livable, Healthier and safer , The goal is really about delivering improved government services and making the community a place where people want to live and do business. This can be achieved through better : - understanding our city through real time data, analytics and Visulaization - Integrate & Collaborate the systems that runs the city - Taking Decisions based on information - Monitoring the performance GIS can help you doing this
- GIS represent the city in layers, and can provide the missing dimsnion Every feature and resource in the city has a location. You can use that location within your GIS to look at data from various sources, systems, or departments. You can analyze community assets in relation to other assets or features of the city to gain valuable context and greater understanding. In this way, location is the common thread needed to create a complete view of what is happening.
- Any Service in the city has allocation in GIS , Whether it’s an e-service from the municipality like (Plot Certificate, Building Permit or Commercial License). Or even when reporting incidents , responders needs location of the incedent , and they need the locations of their cars to better dispatch the right car. The city utilities (Electrecity , Water) runs hundred of kilometers in the city and they do have locations.
- Putting in place a GIS platform and open data strategy creates the infrastructure for information sharing, solution creation, and innovation. Be more transparent with your citizen Encourage startups & business by availing information Partner with universities to solve cities challenges
- Becoming a Smart Community is about leveraging technology, including GIS, to it’s full potential in order to create communities that are transparent, efficient, engaging and desirable for businesses and citizens We believe that every community can be a smart community. We give smart people smart tools to help make becoming a smart community a reality. You might even have some important tools already at your disposal. You might simply need to take another look at how you are using those tools. You might be able to get more out of them. We offer four steps to guide you through the process.
- Following these four steps, you should be well positioned to tackle whatever challenges your community faces and become a more livable, healthy, safe and prosperous community were people like to live and work. If you are at step 1 and you don’t have ArcGIS, you can get started with it today. Download a free trial. If you are at Step 2 – You are ready to build a location strategy Action item??? (we have a white paper that can give you some of the high value areas) 3 - If you have ArcGIS and a solid location strategy, it’s time to start deploying the 150+ free, ready-to-use apps we offer. 4 – If you fine that you need something deeper or more specialized, you have access to Esri’s large, global partner network who can help you design a solution specific for your organization.
- How do you become a smart community? Our approach to building smarter more resilient communities starts with a Location platform. GIS has played a critical role over the years in helping governments improve their analysis of issues, present these findings to government professionals, elected officials, and to the public. The years we have spent supporting different needs around the globe has led us to create the ArcGIS system with the depth and breadth required to solve real-world problems, helping communities improve their economies, infrastructure, health, public safety, and more.

- What’s so special about ArcGIS? ArcGIS platform allows everyone in your community to discover, use, make, and share maps from any device… anywhere, anytime. Imagine a world where government departments easily share and discover data they can use from other departments, and thereby reduce redundant data creation. Or, they discover data that sparks innovative ideas for solving problem in the community.
- This is why you need a location strategy Your community is unique, and so are the solutions and options for using ArcGIS. The second step is to think though your location strategy—to arrive at an approach to using the ArcGIS Platform that will best meet your community’s unique needs and goals.
- The idea is to determine where the highest need areas are and where the GIS platform can add the most value. We refer to this as the “Location Value Assessment.” Your community can prioritize where and how to best apply the ArcGIS platform and its solutions, or Esri can assist you if you like. To assist you, we have created a Launching the Location Platform Guide that you can use to aid you though the process of implementing and using GIS as platform. (mention?)
- With the ArcGIS platform in place and your priority needs identified, the next step is to deliver the solutions that meet those needs. You can create your own applications if you like. However, in the long run, it can be difficult to keep up with the creation of all the apps needed or desired by the community. There are the personnel and monetary costs of creating and maintaining apps Maintenance can be a challenge because technology changes all of the time And citizens have high expectations for app performance and quality. Fortunatley, more than 150 ArcGIS for State and Local Government apps are included with the ArcGIS platform. These are a series of ready-to-go downloadable app templates that support a wide range of government disciplines. The apps can help you get going faster. They are designed for immediate use and can be configured as the you deem appropriate. Importantly, they are fully supported by Esri, which mitigates the headache of maintenance and keeping the apps professional looking.
- In creating the app template to support Smart Communities, we leveraged our 40 years experience working directly with our government customers and asked them to describe for us the applications then needed and what would help those applications be successfully deployed. We asked those questions of governments large and small alike and were able to uncover the common, most valuable workflows. They we created the solutions our customers were requesting and included them with the platform at no additional cost as our way of helping you be successful. To make sure these solutions are truly useful, we made sure they encompassed the best practices we were hearing our customers and were easy to deploy and maintain with very few resources. As a result, we have seen customers who have very few internal resources and very few staff deploy multiple solutions very rapidly. The result is often a reduced workload. For example, the “my government services” app makes it possible for citizens to find the information they need on their own instead of calling government staff.
