This document outlines 8 stages of drowning: 1) Submersion where the face goes under water, 2) Cold Water Shock where breathing is inhibited, 3) Swim Failure where the person cannot stay afloat, 4) Hypothermia where body temperature decreases, 5) Autonomic Conflict where the body does not know if it should fight or flee, 6) Circum Rescue Collapse where the person collapses due to exhaustion shortly after being removed from the water, 7) Pneumonitis where the lungs fill with fluid which can cause illness or death, and 8) Trauma from the actual event or rescue efforts.
