Over 70% of Mumbai's population of over 18 million people live in slums with subhuman conditions. More than 40,000 slums are built on the main water supply pipelines, and 550 million gallons of drinking water must be brought to Mumbai from over 100 miles away each day. Three million people in Mumbai have no access to toilet facilities. Many migrants have moved to Mumbai, increasing the population from 114,000 in 1780 to over 18 million today. The city produces 7000 tonnes of garbage daily despite recycling efforts.
