This document discusses using Bayesian models to analyze implications of changing food packaging shelf life extremes. It provides backgrounds on Claire Sand and Ziynet Boz who lead the company Packaging Technology and Research. They use Bayesian models to translate industry needs to parameters, define relationships between relevant variables, and show implications of scenarios. The models identify critical aspects and unintended consequences of implementations to enable informed decision making.

Anaerobic Digester Workforce Training Curriculum DevelopmentLPE Learning Center
Proceedings available at: http://www.extension.org/67679
The Cornell University PRO-DAIRY Anaerobic Digester Workforce Development Project is a project funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, aimed at developing and delivering high quality educational programs targeted to a range of workforces within the dairy farm-based anaerobic digestion (AD) sector of the clean energy field. One of the barriers to growth of the AD industry in New York State, as identified by current AD operators, is the lack of a trained, skilled workforce to service and maintain different aspects related to the AD and biogas systems. These courses are aimed at developing a workforce to support this need, and to eliminate this barrier to growth.
The Bioprocessing Summit

These slides were presented in a webinar by Denodo in collaboration with BioStorage Technologies and Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and Regenstrief Institute.
BioStorage Technologies, Inc., Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and Regenstrief Institute (CTSI) have joined Denodo to talk about the important role of technological advancements, such as data virtualization, in advancing biospecimen research.
By watching this webinar, you can gain insight into best practices around the integration of biospecimen and research data as well as technology solutions that provide consolidated views and rapid conversions of this data into valuable business insights. You will also learn how data virtualization can assist with the integration of data residing in heterogeneous repositories and can securely deliver aggregated data in real-time.
The lesson outcomes are to describe the product life cycle, identify the life cycle assessment framework and importance of LCA, identify the strict liability concept, define ergonomics, and describe the importance of ergonomics applications.

Considerations and challenges in building an end to-end microbiome workflowEagle Genomics
Many of the data management and analysis challenges in microbiome research are shared with genomics and other life-science big-data disciplines. However there are aspects that are specific: some are intrinsic to microbiome data, some are related to the maturity of the field, with others related to extracting business value from the data.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
Data Centers - Striving Within A Narrow Range - Research Report - MCG - May 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. The continuous injection of capital by alternative investment firms, as well as the growing infrastructural investment from cloud service providers and social media companies, whose revenues are expected to grow over 3.6x larger by value in 2026, will likely help propel center provision and innovation. These factors paint a promising picture for the industry players that offset rising input costs and adapt to new technologies.
According to M Capital Group: “Specifically, the long-term cost-saving opportunities available from the rise of remote managing will likely aid value growth for the industry. Through margin optimization and further availability of capital for reinvestment, strong players will maintain their competitive foothold, while weaker players exit the market to balance supply and demand.”

Ziynet is committed to tackling challenges related to the sustainability of food systems through
engineering principles.
Her current research addresses:
• Food loss and waste mitigation strategies and solutions at various value chain levels (E.g., retail
and consumer) through processing and packaging,
• Valorization of waste into bioproducts, optimization, and modeling to improve sustainability and
shelf-life of food systems, and the assessment of environmental sustainability through Life Cycle
Assessment.
• Digital Twins applications in food systems
She earned her Ph.D. as a Fulbright Scholar from the UF, Department of Agricultural and Biological
Engineering, specializing in Food Packaging. She holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Food
Engineering from Mersin University, focusing on CFD modeling in thermal processing. She is currently
teaching engineering design, Lifecycle Assessment, and Unit Operations courses.

Internalities &
Externalities
•Internalities
• Space external to retail
• Planogram issues
• Labor
• OOS
• Unmet consumer needs for size
and product
• Shifts in value chain drivers
Goals
• More sustainable food system
• Less food waste
• Greater Resilience
• Optimized costs
• Externalities
• Natural disasters (drought, fires,

8. Decision Making I
Bayesian model history and theory
8
• Bayesian belief network (BBN) - also Bayesian network, is
a type of probabilistic reasoning graphical network based
on Bayesian theorem
• The method was first proposed by Judea Pearl in 1986
• Bayesian formula application into the network problem can
significantly simplify the problem, hence, can be applied to
solve real-world complex problems
• Early BBNs only used knowledge from experts in specific
fields. Now, data diversification can turn continuous data
streams into characterizing the problems node relationships
• BBN supports fault diagnosis and reliability analysis
9. Decision Making I
Bayesian model history and theory
9
Bayesian networks are probabilistic graphical models
representing system variables, and their conditional
dependencies in a Directed Acrylic Graph and are composed
of three elements:
1. A set of nodes representing management system variables
2. A set of links showing causal relationships between these
nodes
3. A set of probabilities assigned to each node characterizing
a belief that a node will be in a specific state as per the the
state of the “parent” nodes
Then, conditional Probability Tables (CPT) are constructed.
10. Decision Making I
Bayesian models translate industry needs into parameters
10
> XR Expands Tacit Knowledge
> Beta-Packaging Provides Agility
> AI to Achieve Planet-Centered Design
> Interactions
Much of academic research is not
applicable to industry needs
Bio-derived films that compete against
bPE and bPET are an example
Using Bayesian models, parameters
that need to be achieved, these films
are better able to find a niche
Examples
• Edible barrier for raw
pet food company
• Intelligent packaging
for frozen vegetable
supplier to QSRs
• Active packaging
example with bread
11. • This use case addresses what is
considered when switching to a
better barrier
• Bakery considering converting to
metalized film from OPP
• Lower cost due to high oil prices and
excess metalized capacity
• Shelf life models show this will
increase shelf life from 60 to 370
days
