The role of packaging for Australian fresh produce
Globally, it is estimated that over US$1.2 trillion of food is lost
or wasted across the food supply chain, equivalent to 1.6 billion
tons of food per annum.

worth of food is lost or wasted per annum, ...”
an estimated 7.3 million tonnes across the entire Australian
supply and consumption chain.
Fresh produce is a vital component of human health. Yet many
Australian adults fail to meet national guidelines on fresh produce
consumption, risking adverse health effects. Therefore, it is
imperative for strategies to be deployed which ensure access
for consumers to fresh, nutritious food, rather than allowing it
to be wasted.
Packaging plays an important role in the integrity and protection
of food as it travels through supply chains from farm, through
retail, to plate.
“The trade-off between food waste and
packaging is a delicate balance; more
packaging can result in less food waste
and therefore less impacts.”
The impact of this extra packaging must also be considered to
develop the optimal packaging-to-food ratio.
In light of these issues, the Australian Fresh Produce Alliance
(AFPA), made up of 14 of Australia’s key fresh produce growers
and suppliers, sought to provide key stakeholders with an
objective and evidence-based understanding of the value that
packaging provides within the life cycle of fresh produce. AFPA
engaged Empauer and RMIT University to examine the role
of packaging in minimising food waste whilst ensuring quality
produce reaches consumers.
RMIT University is one of Australia’s largest Universities and
is considered a leader in technology, design, global business,
communication, global communities, health solutions and
urban sustainable futures. Empauer is a leading sustainability
consultancy focussed on providing organisations with information
to make better decisions, convert those decisions to actions,
and deliver the business outcomes they desire.
The project was specifically concerned with the following:
• Mapping the life cycle of 10 fresh produce items, both with
and without packaging. Specifically, this included describing
the food supply chains, and projecting/estimating the shelf
life of produce which is extended with packaging, compared
to the shelf life without packaging i.e. sold loose.
• Describing product diverted from waste because of packaging,
and product going to waste because of no packaging.

May 2024. Sustainable Packaging, also called Green Packaging, or eco-friendly Packaging is a type of packaging that is easily recyclable and manufactured with minimal environmental impact, such as reduced pollution, carbon footprint, and energy consumption.
Sustainable Packaging Features:
(1) Easily recyclable, repulpable, or compostable.
(2) Contains Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials.
(3) Minimum packaging weight is achieved with barrier coatings.
(4) Designed with high Biorenewable content.
Sustainable Packaging Benefits and Advantages:
(1) Environment: Saves on resource and energy costs. Increases revenue as eco-conscious consumers choose sustainable products.
(2) Social: Improves health, well-being, and social responsibility of consumers as sustainable packaging produces less waste and pollution.
(3) Economy: Saves on resource and energy Costs. Increases revenue as eco-conscious consumers choose sustainable products.
Sustainable Packaging Challenges and Solutions:
(1) Cost: Sustainable packaging is usually more expensive than conventional packaging options.
Solution: The high initial cost of sustainable packaging is offset by cost savings from reduced waste and energy consumption.
(2) Compatibility: Sustainable packaging may not be suitable for certain products that require special protection, or have specific packaging requirements.
Solution: Develop alternative packaging materials that meets product specifications while still being sustainable.
(3) Logistics: Implementing sustainable packaging requires changes to logistics and supply chain which can be challenging to coordinate.
Solution: Work with suppliers and logistics providers to develop and implement sustainable packaging solutions.
(4) Policies: Sustainable packaging is subject to various policies and regulations which can be complex depending on the region.
Solution: Get familiar with policies and regulations and collaborate with policymakers and experts to ensure compliance.
(5) Awareness: Consumers lack awareness and education about sustainable packaging.
Solutions: Launch marketing campaigns to educate and raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable packaging.

Sustainable Packaging
May 2024. Sustainable Packaging, also called Green Packaging, or eco-friendly Packaging is a type of packaging that is easily recyclable and manufactured with minimal environmental impact, such as reduced pollution, carbon footprint, and energy consumption.
Sustainable Packaging Features:
(1) Easily recyclable, repulpable, or compostable.
(2) Contains Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials.
(3) Minimum packaging weight is achieved with barrier coatings.
(4) Designed with high Biorenewable content.
Sustainable Packaging Benefits and Advantages:
(1) Environment: Saves on resource and energy costs. Increases revenue as eco-conscious consumers choose sustainable products.
(2) Social: Improves health, well-being, and social responsibility of consumers as sustainable packaging produces less waste and pollution.
(3) Economy: Saves on resource and energy Costs. Increases revenue as eco-conscious consumers choose sustainable products.
Sustainable Packaging Challenges and Solutions:
(1) Cost: Sustainable packaging is usually more expensive than conventional packaging options.
Solution: The high initial cost of sustainable packaging is offset by cost savings from reduced waste and energy consumption.
(2) Compatibility: Sustainable packaging may not be suitable for certain products that require special protection, or have specific packaging requirements.
Solution: Develop alternative packaging materials that meets product specifications while still being sustainable.
(3) Logistics: Implementing sustainable packaging requires changes to logistics and supply chain which can be challenging to coordinate.
Solution: Work with suppliers and logistics providers to develop and implement sustainable packaging solutions.
(4) Policies: Sustainable packaging is subject to various policies and regulations which can be complex depending on the region.
Solution: Get familiar with policies and regulations and collaborate with policymakers and experts to ensure compliance.
(5) Awareness: Consumers lack awareness and education about sustainable packaging.
Solutions: Launch marketing campaigns to educate and raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable packaging.
Policy wise, in 2019, SoScience and Perrier Inc. launched "the future of positive packaging" to promote sustainable packaging solutions through multi-stakeholder cooperation. Sustainable packaging directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG12): Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Packaging Sustainability is maturing. Product manufacturers, distribution experts, and consumers are driving substantial changes in raw material sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, and distribution practices.
How to choose the right packaging for your food product?
The food packaging you choose isn’t just about what looks good on shelf. You also have to consider functional elements like how it will work to contain and protect your product in the short and long-term, how convenient and easy-to-open it is for the consumer, and if it effectively communicates the purpose and benefits of your product.
Creating the perfect packaging for your functional food or beverage product is all about finding the balance between the technical side and the artistic side. Oftentimes, brands spend too much time on one or the other, which more often than not, leads to poor management of time and resources, and a less than ideal package that doesn’t tick all the necessary boxes that consumers require.
The goal for any brand with its food packaging should be to create a well-designed package that contributes to a positive consumer experience.

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. - 4. 4/14/23, 10:15 AM 4 Packaging Lessons from Kiwi's Global Supply Chain Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and dimensional weight optimization (DIM, the amount of space a package occupies versus its actual weight) have been used to optimize the void spaces between packages. "We optimized packaging strength as a function of cooling rates, case dimensions, venting, and pack density using a synthetic kiwi during the off-season," Bronlund explains. This allowed the team to optimize packaging while not interfering with production. 2. Use advanced sensing technology to prevent food spoilage. Kiwi is particularly susceptible to ethylene - just l0ppb of ethylene in the container causes unwanted ripening of all kiwi, shortening the storage life. East's team discovered that non-perforated films and modified atmospheres of 12 to 15% oxygen and 3 to 4% carbon dioxide prevented kiwifruit softening. "We determined that using cutting-edge grading technologies, such as image processing and NIR (near infrared spectroscopy), to segregate kiwi by maturity level and size reduces spoilage," East adds. 3. Deliver true sustainability through future proofing of packaging. Work is being done to make Kiwi packaging "future proof" and to develop the most sustainable export packaging. Given that the bulk of New Zealand kiwi is destined for the export market, kiwi packaging must conform to sustainable packaging rules in each unique marketplace. Plastic packaging, for example, has been abolished in France despite the role it plays in maintaining the acceptable appearance of kiwi.
