7 EASY STEPS FOR TEACHING
YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO
BRUSH THEIR TEETH
Brushing should start at a young age!
Why do kids need to brush their teeth?
 Just because your children’s baby teeth will
eventually fall out does not mean they do not need
to take care of them.
 Kids need to keep their baby teeth strong so that
their permanent teeth can grow in strong. Decayed
baby teeth can lead to problems with permanent
adult teeth.
 If you need help teaching your kids how to brush
their teeth, follow these seven steps:
1. Keep a family brushing schedule.
 Try to set a brushing schedule for your whole family.
If the “big kids” are brushing their teeth at this time,
your little ones will want to join in on it, too.
2. Brush with your children.
 In addition to brushing at the same time, brush your
teeth in the same bathroom as your children. They
will learn by your example that it’s important to
have healthy brushing habits.
3. Sit the little ones on your lap.
 If you have tiny toddlers that are learning to brush
their teeth, sit them on your lap and guide them.
When they’re this young, they’re going to need
more hands-on help.
4. Talk them through it.
 When your children are learning how to brush, talk
them through the steps. Tell them when to brush the
surfaces and insides of their teeth. Remind them that
gentle, short circular motions work best.
5. Let them pick out their toothbrush.
 Find the soft-bristle toothbrushes and let them pick
out one from those. Fun toothbrushes with their
favorite superheroes or princesses printed on them
will make your kids excited to brush their teeth.
6. Brush along to a favorite song.
 Turn on one of their favorite songs while they’re
brushing. Not only will this help them brush for at
least two minutes, but it will also make brushing just
a little more fun!
7. Schedule a dental checkup.
 Let your children learn some pointers about
brushing their teeth from their family dentist. The
dentist will be able to teach them the science
behind good oral hygiene and tooth care.
 Make sure your dentist is well-practiced in family
dentistry. If he is, he’ll know how to work with
children better. He will be able to talk them about
dental care in a way they can understand.
