A Case Study on complementing cost-savings with strong governance and capital discipline
A recent survey* of 9 FPSO projects identified a combined 38% cost overrun totaling $2.5bn in wasted capital. One of the identified causal factors behind this dead-weight additional capital was “a lack of clarity regarding contract responsibilities”.
8over8 presented a case study where efficiency gains were generated in the world’s first FLNG project by implementing a proven system of strong governance and commercial discipline. The result was connected decision making and reduced incidence of conflict and claims amongst stakeholders in the world’s first FLNG project.

This document discusses integrated project controls solutions and their benefits. It summarizes a featured project, the Marina Bay Sands Casino Resort in Singapore, and how an integrated project controls platform can connect project teams, provide early warnings and predictive insights, and implement integrated cost controls. The platform allows for project-wide collaboration, centralized reporting and dashboards, contract management, budgeting and forecasting, variance analysis, and other features to help manage projects and minimize complexity.
The document discusses how digital transformation is occurring across industries like infrastructure, construction, and energy. It notes trends shaping capital projects like construction including digital collaboration, BIM, data-driven design, IoT, digital twins, and advanced analytics. The construction industry spends little on IT and has low productivity growth. Adopting digital tools could help cut costs by 13-21% and improve processes like clash detection, RFI handling, and asset management through integrated data and models. BIM adoption is rising but implementing new technologies requires a long-term focus on simplicity, measurement, security, and developing capabilities over time.
The document discusses challenges with large, complex projects known as "gigaprojects" and ways to address them. It notes that gigaprojects are increasing in spending and size. They face issues like cost overruns, risks, and stagnant productivity. To help, the document advocates connecting technology, processes, and people. This involves using technology to share integrated project information, improving processes, and addressing cognitive biases in decision-making. It provides an example of a $5 billion facility that streamlined management of 6 projects using integrated cost tracking, reporting, and schedule software.

LF Energy Webinar: Carbon Data Specifications: Mechanisms to Improve Data Acc...DanBrown980551
This LF Energy webinar took place June 20, 2024. It featured:
-Alex Thornton, LF Energy
-Hallie Cramer, Google
-Daniel Roesler, UtilityAPI
-Henry Richardson, WattTime
In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
"Choosing proper type of scaling", Olena SyrotaFwdays
Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.

BIM – Tools for Breaking Down the Barriers

3. Introduction
Over the past few years,
Building Information
Modelling has become
one of the hottest topics
in construction. Here are
three fundamentals:
4. Let’s be clear about BIM
BIM is a process
It holds vastly more
information than just
the 3D geometry.
BIM is global team work
It lets all users work
collaboratively, in real time.
The “I” is central to BIM
BIM is all about information;
how it‟s captured and how
it‟s made available.
So how to describe BIM?
Part people. Part process.
Part software. And
all collaboration.
5. The BIM boom:
2,600% growth in three years
In 2009, less than 10,000
BIM model files were
being managed on the
Aconex system. By late
2012, there were more
than 270,000 – some
2,600% growth.
The size of the models
has also nearly doubled
over the past five years.
7. The promise of BIM:
Better lifecycle management
BIM brings full lifecycle
management within reach.
As information is passed
from team to team along
the phases of a project,
there is often information
“leakage”.
Collaborative BIM promises
to ensure that all information
is seamlessly transitioned
from one phase to another,
resulting in an asset with
a far richer set of information,
and of greater value.
