The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Sleeping Beauty – A Play
Scene 1
Narrator 1: The people from a small town in France are outside the
King’s summer castle. The King goes out onto the balcony.
King: We are very happy to tell you that we have a baby daughter. Her
name is Aurora. Everyone is invited to a party, here at the castle,
tomorrow.
Narrator 2: The King goes back into the castle. The Queen is singing to
the baby.
King: The party tomorrow is going to be wonderful. All the people from
the town are coming and, of course, we must invite the Flower
Fairies.
Scene 2
Narrator 3: Everyone in the castle is very busy. The cooks are cooking
delicious roast meats with vegetables and they are making
delicious cakes, too.
Narrator 4: The cleaners are sweeping and dusting. The Queen’s
friends are picking flowers in the garden and putting flowers
in all the rooms.
King: Mmm…! The food smells delicious. And the castle is very pretty
with all these flowers.
Narrator 1: Little Princess Aurora is sleeping happily. She doesn’t know
there is going to be a party tomorrow.
Scene 3
Narrator 2: The next day the sun shines and all the men, women and
children from the town come to the party. The children like
the new baby and want to pick her up.

Queen: You can pick her up later, when she wakes up.
King: Yes. Come and sit down now. The food is ready and we’re all
hungry!
Little Boy: Look! Look! Over there by the trees.
Narrator 3: Everyone turns and looks at the trees.
Little Girl: Oh! Are they …?
Queen: Yes, they are! They’re the Flower Fairies!
Flower Fairies: Hello. We’ve got some very special presents for Princess
Aurora.
Fairy Daisy: She’s going to be beautiful.
Fairy Iris: She’s going to he happy.
Fairy Sunflower: She’s going to be healthy.
Fairy Poppy: And …
Fairy Weed: STOP!
Queen: Who’s this?
Flower Fairies: It’s Fairy Weed. She’s a bad Fairy! She must leave the
party!
Fairy Weed: No, I’m not going to leave! I’ve got a present for Princess
Aurora too! … When she’s sixteen she’s going to prick her
finger on a spinning wheel and die!
Fairy Poppy: Wait! I’ve got to give Princess Aurora my present now. I
can’t change Fairy Weed’s present - Princess Aurora is
going to prick her finger on a spinning wheel when she’s
sixteen. But she isn’t going to die! She’s going to sleep for
a hundred years!
King: She isn’t going to prick her finger on a spinning wheel, or sleep for
a hundred years,” says the King. “We must destroy all the
spinning wheels in the town! Tomorrow, everyone must bring

their spinning wheels to the town square. We’re going to destroy
them all!
Scene 4
Narrator 4: The next day everyone takes their spinning wheels to the
town square.
Narrator 1: There are big spinning wheels and small spinning wheels,
new spinning wheels and old spinning wheels, and the
King’s men destroy them all.
King: Thank you, everyone. Thank you for bringing your spinning
wheels. I’m very sorry that you can’t make your clothes now. But I
want to help you. I’m going to pay the people in Paris to make
your clothes for you.”
People of the town: Hurray for the King. Hurray for our good kind King!
Scene 5
Narrator 2: Princess Aurora grows into a beautiful young woman.
Narrator 3: On her sixteenth birthday everyone in the castle is
preparing for her birthday party.
Princess Aurora: Come on, Molly. Let’s go to the old tower. The door is
always locked but today everyone’s busy. Perhaps it’s
open.
Narrator 4: The door isn’t locked! Princess Aurora and Molly go up the
stairs.
Narrator 1: In a room at the top there’s an old lady. She’s spinning
cloth.
Princess Aurora: What’s that?
Old Lady: It’s a spinning wheel. Come and see.
Narrator 2: Princess Aurora touches the spinning wheel and pricks her finger!
Narrator 3: The Flower Fairies fly into the tower.

Fairy Daisy: Oh no! We’re too late! She’s asleep!
Fairy Sunflower: She can’t sleep alone for a hundred years.
Fairy Iris: No. Everyone in the castle must sleep for a hundred years.
Narrator 4: Molly falls asleep near the bed.
Narrator 1: The King and Queen fall asleep on their thrones.
Narrator 2: The Queen’s friends fall asleep picking flowers.
Narrator 3: The cleaners fall asleep sweeping and dusting.
Narrator 4: The cook falls asleep making a cake.
Narrator 1: The birds fall asleep in the trees.
Narrator 2: The cat falls asleep chasing a mouse.
Narrators 1, 2, 3 and 4: The castle is silent - everyone is asleep.
Scene 6
Narrators 1, 2, 3 and 4: Everyone sleeps for a hundred years.
Narrator 4: One day a Prince from Spain comes to the town. The people
tell him about the sleeping Princess.
Prince: I’m going to the castle. I want to see the sleeping Princess.
Scene 7
Narrator 1: There are big trees around the castle and beautiful flowers
are growing over the trees and the castle walls.
Narrator 2: The Prince goes to the old tower. He sees the sleeping
Princess. He kisses her hand and she wakes up!
Princess Aurora: You’re the Prince of my dreams!
Prince: And you, Sleeping Beauty, are the Princess of my dreams.

King: Yes. We’re happy that you’re here. And thank you very much for
waking us up!
