People are getting less sleep due to excessive use of technology in bed. Connectivity through mobile devices accounts for 90% of internet usage, allowing people to browse on their phones late into the night instead of sleeping. Banning mobile devices from the bedroom is proposed to help disturb this trend and allow for better sleep, though some may resist due to dependency on phones for alarms or connectivity. If followed, this could result in less media usage at bedtime and more time spent sleeping.
Lee Rainie will present a keynote discussion on networked learning at the The Free Learning 2.0 Conference on August 22. The conference is "a unique chance to participate in a global conversation on rethinking teaching and learning in the age of the Internet."
Director Lee Rainie will provide a look at some of the most recent survey results obtained by the Pew Internet Project on mobile computing and the use of handheld devices.
Pew Internet Director Lee Rainie discussed the new media ecosystem with leaders of community foundations from Western states and several other locales. He described how three technology revolutions have made the media world personal, portable, participatory, and pervasive in people’s lives and how those changes have affected communities.

A presentation on what communication technology will look like in the year 2026. A review of where we came from with technology and a look into the future of whats still to come.
The increased usage of mobile devices and the rise of social networking have made personal technology a more integral part of people's lives than ever before. This study looked to uncover any issues and concerns that people have with the increasing pervasiveness of technology in their lives, particularly around security, privacy, and heath/safety.
Some of the key findings from this study are:
- People still do not trust mobile technology enough to feel comfortable making online purchases/transactions, preferring instead to use their computers
- While people have concerns about their online privacy, it has little impact on their actual mobile technology usage
- Concerns over the usage of mobile technology and personal health have little impact on people's mobile device usage, in fact, many people are skeptical over claims that mobile technology may pose a health risk

2. The Issue
The issue is that so many people are not getting
enough sleep due to the tech devices that are so
prevalent in today’s society.
3. Information
“Connectivity via mobile devices accounts for 90%
of overall internet usage” -Mashable.com
The availability and mobility of these devices is
interfering with sleep patterns because users can
take their mobile device with them to the
bedroom.
4. The Reality
So many allow a tablet, mobile phone, or laptop
into their sleeping area. The connectivity allows
users to read or browse, without being
cognizant of the time spent using the device.
A growing number of people sleep with a phone
or other device, within arms reach, throughout
the night.
5. The Remedy
The best way to disturb this trend is to simply
banish mobile devices from the sleeping
environment.
6. Implementation
While this initiative will not be well received, it is
a proactive way to allow for better sleep.
The rebuttal will most likely have something to do
with the alarm clock or the craving for
connectivity.
7. Results
If this initiative is promoted and followed, the
result will be less time spent on media usage
and more time spent sleeping.
