Learn and Serve America is a program established in 1993 to promote community service and civic engagement among Americans of all ages through programs like AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America. The goal is to make service-learning a standard part of American education. Learn and Serve America funds K-12 schools, community organizations, and colleges to design hands-on community service projects that meet needs while developing students' skills. Research shows service-learning improves academic achievement and engagement, fosters positive civic attitudes and behaviors, and reduces risky behavior. While only 9% of high schools had service-learning programs in 1984, by 2004 over 30% of public schools, including 46% of high schools, organized service-learning.
