Skill 23 and 26 Translating and Solving Word Problems Pages 127-132d
These are
hard examples
that you
should
look at
last.
Vocabulary for translating words to math operations
Here are two inequality problems which may be on your test. Sometimes
You will just be asked to set them up and not solve. These are just set up.
This inequality problem is already translated. The inequality itself is given in the problem.
Your job is to solve it and make sense of the results. Notice that N represents
the number of CD which cannot be a fraction. See the number line for a picture
of the possible solutions which are whole numbers like the number of CDs could be.
Jose has a $30 gift card for Amazon.com. He plans to buy as many
books as he can. The cost of each book is $4. There is also a
single shipping charge of $2. How many books can he afford
to buy spending at most $30 which is his gift card amount?
If n stands for the number of books, then
4n + 2 ≤ 30 would represent the cost of n books at $4 each plus
$2 for shipping. That has to be less than or equal
to $30.
Solve to get n ≤ 7. So he could by 7 or 6 or 5 or 4 or 3 or 2 or 1 book.
Latasha had $25 to spend at the fair. If the admission to the fair is $4 and the
rides cost $1.50 each, what is the greatest number of rides Latasha can ride?
If n is the number of rides, then 4 + 1.50n ≤ 25
Solve this to get n ≤ 14 So, she could ride from 1 to 14 rides and not go over $25.
An elevator is on the twentieth floor. It goes down 11 floors and then up
5 floors. What floor is the elevator on now?
20-11+5 or the 14th floor. You don’t have to do anything but figure it out.
The elevation of Mt. Everest is 29,028 feet. The elevation of the Dead Sea is -485 feet.
What is the difference in the elevation between Mt. Everest and the Dead Sea?
29028 – (-485) or 29028 + 485 or 29513 feet.
I have concentrated on inequalities in this lesson. Go back to the first page
and look at the quadratic examples about area of rectangles.
