The skeletal system consists of bones that provide structure, protect organs, and enable movement. The axial skeleton includes the skull, spine, ribs, and breastbone, protecting the brain, spinal cord, heart and lungs. The appendicular skeleton comprises the shoulder and hip bones, collar bones, and bones of the upper and lower arms and legs, allowing for mobility. Together, the over 200 bones that make up the skeletal system give the human body its shape and ability to move.
