shown it takes 21
days to start a new
habit or stop a new
one.
Be Proactive
I am in charge of My life
 Goal: Think about results before deciding
what to do.
 Discussions can focus on taking care of
themselves, taking care of their things, reacting
or not reacting to others’ behavior, planning
ahead and thinking about what the right thing
to do is.
 Young children: Role plays to practice the skill
of ‘stop and think’.
 3 before me- can you resolve the problem
before asking mom or teacher. They can usually
get what they need.
• Teens: Focus more on the peer group so it’s important to help
you child focus on his or her own life and choices
Avoid ‘save the day’ situations
Talk about things he or she would stand up and fight for
in the face of pressure.
Trust: Talk about deposits and withdrawals of trust
Be Proactive
Begin With The End In Mind
Think about how you would like something to turn out
before you get started.
 Family Activity- Mission Statement
 Younger children
 Wants vs. Needs Collage and then discuss why they chose
each for wants and needs.
 Help child set goal and then determine the steps to reach
it. Check in on it daily and weekly adjusting as needed.
 Teens
 Career path conversations
 Research jobs related to interests or career goals

 Use a planner, weekly
log, or to do list

 Younger children
 Explain every situation should not have a defined winner.
 Create a chart and your child can write their name on it
for each day that they create- win-win resolutions.
 Encourage win-win situations among siblings. Let them
work out the solution.
 Teen Activities
 Model accepting responsibility when we as adults do
something we are sorry for.
 All ages: Thank those who do the job well rather than
reprimand those who didn’t. The ones that didn’t do
the job right will get the message.

 Listen first talk second
 Listen to what others are saying and empathize with
them
 Practice I feel statements
 Create a peace table at home
 Younger Children: difficulty understanding others point
of view.
 Introduce listening as a skill with eyes, ears, and heart.

 Use of a talking stone

create lists for each other) and determine how
those can be used to create synergy in the home.

Sjms way 7 habits

  • 3. Why are we here?  Enhance leadership  Enhance SJMS experience  Enhance peer and parent experiences  Improve the culture of the school  Provide a framework and tools to be the best version of ourselves
  • 4. Grace and Courtesy  Grace: A polite manner of behaving  Courtesy: Excellence of manners or social conduct; polite behavior  Respectful  Favor/Helpful
  • 5. Habit  An acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary  Research has shown it takes 21 days to start a new habit or stop a new one.
  • 6. Be Proactive I am in charge of My life  Goal: Think about results before deciding what to do.  Discussions can focus on taking care of themselves, taking care of their things, reacting or not reacting to others’ behavior, planning ahead and thinking about what the right thing to do is.  Young children: Role plays to practice the skill of ‘stop and think’.  3 before me- can you resolve the problem before asking mom or teacher. They can usually get what they need.
  • 7. • Teens: Focus more on the peer group so it’s important to help you child focus on his or her own life and choices Avoid ‘save the day’ situations Talk about things he or she would stand up and fight for in the face of pressure. Trust: Talk about deposits and withdrawals of trust Be Proactive

Begin With The End In Mind Think about how you would like something to turn out before you get started.  Family Activity- Mission Statement  Younger children  Wants vs. Needs Collage and then discuss why they chose each for wants and needs.  Help child set goal and then determine the steps to reach it. Check in on it daily and weekly adjusting as needed.  Teens  Career path conversations  Research jobs related to interests or career goals
  • 9. Put First Things First  Put First Things First in writing.  Use a planner, weekly log, or to do list Responsibilities Supplies to avoid last minute trips to store, Schedule events Accomplish school related projects on time or early
  • 10. Put First Things First  Younger Children  Create a list of tasks they need to complete during the week  Help them rank order importance  Teen Activities  Create a planning and filing system  Spend time as a family cooking dinner, watching movies family projects. Family before Friends.

Think Win-Win How can we make this work for everyone?  Younger children  Explain every situation should not have a defined winner.  Create a chart and your child can write their name on it for each day that they create- win-win resolutions.  Encourage win-win situations among siblings. Let them work out the solution.  Teen Activities  Model accepting responsibility when we as adults do something we are sorry for.  All ages: Thank those who do the job well rather than reprimand those who didn’t. The ones that didn’t do the job right will get the message.

Synergize Two or more people working together to create a better solution than than they would have thought of alone  Work as a team  Contribute to the group  15 minute program: everyone drops everything to contribute as a group  Wash dishes, sweep porch, etc.  Identify strengths of family members (have siblings create lists for each other) and determine how those can be used to create synergy in the home.

Sharpen the Saw  Take good care of self  Body  Brain  Heart  Soul  Develop a ‘Sharpen the Saw’ activity center in the home  Arts and crafts, classical music, books, learning games.  Discuss ways to sharpen the saw  Limit television and computer time  Journaling  Read Newspapers  Join a gym  Philanthropy  Museums
