SIX STROKE
ENGINE
A six-stroke engine is an unconventional internal
combustion engine design that attempts to
improve the efficiency and emissions of
traditional four-stroke engines. It was proposed
as an alternative to the more common four-
stroke and two-stroke engine configurations.
The six-stroke engine concept typically involves
two additional strokes beyond the traditional
four-stroke cycle (intake, compression, power,
and exhaust strokes).

SIX STROKE ENGINE
INTAKE STROKE (1ST STROKE)
This is the same as in a
traditional four-stroke engine. The
intake valve opens, allowing the
air-fuel mixture to enter the
combustion chamber as the
piston moves downward.

COMPRESSION STROKE (2ND STROKE)
• Similar to the standard four-
stroke cycle, the intake
valve closes, and the piston
moves back upward,
compressing the air-fuel
mixture in the combustion
chamber.

POWER STROKE (3RD STROKE)
• During this stroke, the spark
plug ignites the compressed
air-fuel mixture, causing a
controlled explosion. The
rapid expansion of gases
pushes the piston downward,
generating mechanical
power.

WATER INJECTION (4TH STROKE)
• The water injection stroke is
introduced in the six-stroke engine
concept. After the power stroke,
water is injected into the hot
combustion chamber. The water
vaporizes due to the high
temperature, absorbing heat energy
from the combustion chamber. This
helps in cooling the engine and
reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx)
emissions, which are a major
contributor to air pollution.

AIR INJECTION (5TH STROKE)
• After the water injection stroke,
the air injection stroke follows.
In this phase, additional air is
injected into the combustion
chamber. This is done to
displace any remaining
combustion gases and ensure
that the next combustion cycle
starts with a fresh charge of air,
which can improve combustion
efficiency and reduce
emissions.

EXHAUST STROKE (6TH STROKE)
• This stroke is similar to the
exhaust stroke in a traditional
four-stroke engine. The
exhaust valve opens, and the
piston moves upward,
expelling the remaining
combustion gases from the
combustion chamber.

SUMMARY
the six-stroke engine is a concept
aimed at improving the efficiency and
emissions performance of internal
combustion engines by adding two
additional strokes to the traditional
four-stroke cycle. While it offers
potential advantages, it is still in the
experimental stage, and its
widespread adoption in the
automotive industry is uncertain.
