Bangladesh is a densely populated developing country in this third world. By Keep pace with the modern world, Bangladesh is also planning to increase the use of renewable energy instead of conventional fossil fuel based energy as these increase the average temperature by emitting huge carbon-di-oxide. There are different sources of renewable energy like wind energy, solar energy, hydro-electric, biomass, bio gas resources etc. in Bangladesh. Among them, solar energy is most prominent. To accelerate the use of renewable solar energy and reduce the dependency of other traditional nonrenewable energy, Bangladesh government targets to gain the capability of produce 2.4 GW of renewable energy within 2021. For achieving this goal, lot of large scale solar power plant are decided to establish by the government. If it is possible to establish all of these solar power plant, at the same time they will enrich our national grid and reduce the carbon-di-oxide emission. Individual power producer should be encouraged to invest in establishing solar power plant.

3. ➢ Searching for alternative energy sources is essential due to global warming occurred by
conventional fossil fuel based energy.
➢ Renewable energy can play a vital role in this regard.
➢ Bangladesh Government’s target for producing power from renewable energy is 2.4 GW
within 2021 [1].
➢ Among 2.4 GW, 2.11 GW will be produced from solar energy [1].
➢ Among this 2.11 GW, almost all of power will be planned to produce from solar power
plant [1].
➢ The main contributors in terms of capacity is 1500 MW including all on grid large scale
solar power plants[1].
➢ These 1500 MW are planned to produce from 13 PV power plant which will be located 13
different places of Bangladesh [1].

4. ➢We can classify our solar power plant into three for explanation. They are:
small scale power plant, medium scale power plant and large scale power
plant.
➢The capacity of small scale power plant will be less than 50 MW.
➢The capacity of a medium scale power plant will be greater than 50 MW
less than 100 MW.
➢The capacity of a large scale power plant will be greater than 100 MW.

5. ➢ Among the proposed solar power plant, 71% power will be supplied from large scale power plant.
➢ This large scale power plant can further be categorized in 3 classes.
They are: Deal signed, Under planning and Rejected [2].
➢ Only 2 large scale power plant were undersigned with third party to establish. This will supply 27% of
total power.

7. Status of large scale Power plant
Present condition of “200 MW Teknaf Power Plant”:
➢ Southern Solar Power Limited a subsidiary of US based SunEdison had
signed with BPDB to develop it [3].
➢ Estimated investment will be 300 million$[3].
➢ BPDB will pay 0.17$ for per unit power [3].
➢ BPDB will purchase power for 20 years on the basis of no electricity no
payment [3].
➢ This project will require 1000 acres of land [3].
➢ This project will be completed in 18 months [3].
➢ This project is cancelled by the government due to failure of
implementation [5].

8. Status of large scale Power plant
Present condition of “200 MW Shundargonj Power Plant”:
➢ Teesta Solar Limited (TSL), joint venture of a Bangladeshi & Chinese
power company has signed with BPDB to develop it [4].
➢ Beximco Power of Bangladesh will hold 80% share of this venture [4].
➢ BPDB will purchase power from venture for 20 years [4].
➢ BPDB will pay 15 US Cents for per unit power [4].
➢ Government terminated the project due to failure of implementation [6].

11. Although Bangladesh government is targeted to produce 1.5 GW solar power
from 13 large scale solar plant [1], but most of them are either in planning
stage or rejected. There are lot of limitation in large solar power plant
development. They can be written as following [2]:

➢ Limitations due to blanks in Supply Chain
➢ Limitations of Existing Power Infrastructure and Technical Standards
➢ Other limitations

17. ➢ It is mentionable that till now establishment of any large scale (greater than
100 MW) solar power plant in Bangladesh not yet started.
➢ Maximum capacity of a largest solar power plant of Bangladesh is just 20 MW
which is situated in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar financed by BPDB.
➢ Although large scale solar power plant are not yet in operation as expected
but with the proper guidance and step by the government, this project can
become the huge source of renewable solar energy to replace conventional
fossil fuel based energy.
