1. Misawa sailors in the spotlight
NAF Misawa’s Sailors of the Quarter
This edition of Misawa’s Sailor in the Spotlight focuses
on three shipmates who were selected as Naval Air
Facility Misawa’s (NAFM) Sailors of the Quarter for
third quarter.
Naval Air Crewman (Avionics) 1st Class Scott Counsel-
man was selected as Senior Sailor of the Quarter.
Counselman, 29, is an active member of the NAFM
team. He was involved with the Family Readiness
Group, the Misawa Navy Ball Committee, and also
volunteered at the Bikou-en Orphanage. Counselman,
the Operations Administration and Air Crew Division
leading petty officer, also pursued off-duty education
by completing two college courses. By heading up the Junior Sailor Advancement Workshop (JSAW), Counselman is help-
ing Sailors stationed at Misawa prepare for their advancement tests.
The Orlando, Fla. native also put in more than 80 flight hours on board the command C-12 aircraft for various missions
including Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines.
“He is my go to guy,” said Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Manny Lubong. “He loves to volunteer
and has a strong desire to take care of the command and its Sailors. His involvement with JSAW, the Navy Ball, while also
helping his shipmates with retirements, reenlistments or transferring, demonstrates this.”
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 2nd Class Jason Williams was selected as Junior Sailor of the Quarter.
Williams, a native of Gary, Ind., also contributes a lot to the command. He was the Misawa Navy Ball Committee enter-
tainment chairman, serves as the secretary for Misawa Air Base’s Airmen Against Drunk Driving (A2D2,) and often volun-
teers at the Bikou-en Orphanage. Williams also pursued off-duty education by completing Biology and Biology lab.
The 27-year-old Sailor primarily works at the NAFM Flight Terminal. During the quarter, he and his shipmates hosted
more than 120 Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan for an exercise, and a detachment from Patrol
Squadron 8. As flight support supervisor, Williams helped land more than 60 planes, and ensured all visiting Sailor and
Marines were taken care of.
“Williams is a guy I can count on over at the terminal,” said Lubong. “He’s the building manager for three hangers and
always keeps his chain of command in the loop on what’s going on. He is also an avid volunteer.”
Personnel Specialist Seaman Ricardo Longoria was selected as Bluejacket of The Quarter.
A native of Edinburg, Texas, Longoria has become an indispensable member of Personnel Support Detachment Misawa
(PSD.) He handles all personnel matters for two of Misawa’s larger tenant commands, Navy Information Operations
Command Misawa, and Navy Munitions Command East Asia Division Unit Misawa. This includes handling all permanent
change of station, pay and entitlements, and re-enlistments for these commands. Longoria, 32, is also an assistant com-
mand fitness leader, auxiliary security force watch stander, and PSD safety petty officer.
Longoria, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance, also volunteers his off-duty time help-
ing numerous worthwhile causes, including helping at the Bikou-en Orphanage, and this year’s Misawa Air Base Special
Olympics. He also volunteered as a Misawa Navy Ball Committee member.
“He is a true example of what a Sailor should be,” said Senior Chief Personnel Specialist Danielle Gunsett, PSD Misawa’s
officer in charge. “His willingness to help others and his desire to go above-and-beyond, without being asked, were just
two of the qualities that led to his nomination.”
