How the Developers community help to lead the way to
modern data warehousing
SIT Mai – Mar 2019
Jan van Ansem – Principal SAP DataWarehouse
consultant
Business Case:
Make DW GDPR compliant by anonymising PII data for users not authorised to see PII data
https://blogs.sap.com/2017/11/10/anonymization-analyze-sensitive-data-without-compromising-privacy/
Easy answer:
?
Locating my Calc View in HANA Studio....
?
Which Web IDE?
•Full Stack Web IDE (Cloud)
•Legacy Cloud WebIDE’s
•xs Web IDE
•xsa Web IDE
And there is more...
• XS -> XSA migration?
• CDS (other than ABAP)
• GitWhat?
• ‘Data Science Platform’?
HANA Studio
XS engine
_SYS_REPO
Empathise - what is the problem?
•There is an opportunity to do better data warehousing by using more modern
tools, but many data warehouse developers don’t know how to use these tools,
what best practice is and what standards to consider.
•There is a need to move away from the old technology stack as this will become
obsolete and unsupported, but data warehouse developers don’t know where to
migrate to and how to do the migration
Persona: SAPDWDeveloper
Olivia Olapsen
• 7 years of SAP BW – mainly on SAP ECC data
• Learned to build Calc Views and some SQL tables ‘on the job’
• Recently asked to help implement a Self Service capability in the Data
Warehouse to support the Data Scientists
• Feels that Data Warehouse development should be done in a more
agile way
• Gets constant questions about ‘IoT’ data but does not really know
how that relates to her Data Warehouse
• Frustrated about the ‘learning journey’ for ‘xsa’ as a lot of training
material seems not relevant
Ideas
•Break down barriers between the BW world and the HANA way of working
(xsa support, offer Git for change management, SQL views to access data stored
in BW)
•Set up templates and wizards in HANA to hide/default deployment details
•Provide best practice guidelines for developing database artifacts on xsa in a data
warehousing scenario
•Organise cross-discipline training and knowledge sharing sessions
•Share experiences where the development community have successfully helped
data warehousing move towards a modern way of development
(blog, whitepapers, FAQ’s........)
What is already being done?
•Introduction of “SAP HANA Database Application” template on XSA
•BW/4HANA 2.0 supports xsa Calc Views. It also automatically generates SQL
Views for some InfoProviders
•SAP has recently introduced a new SAP Training course (HDW410)
