3. The Advantage of Using SIRIUS
The application of the new SIRIUS to POWERGEN battery char-
gers offers considerable advantages:
- It allows to have the Wa and Wo-Wa version in one single
gearcase.
- It is suitable for any battery from 24 to 96V.
- It optimizes charging cycles.
- It allows to recharge only the power which has been actually
used.
- It increases the average battery life.
- It reduces normal maintenance costs.
- Energy saving.
- Monitor and supervision of the correct microprocessor operation
via an external supervising circuit (Watchdog).
4. SIRIUS is a battery charger equipped with a digital control unit
based on microprocessor technology and assembled with surface
mount device components.
The controller is an electronic board developed specially for
battery charger control. It is a flexible and modular unit able to
satisfy all requirements related to the battery recharging in
general and to specifically resolve all that is necessary for the
end user. The unit is made up from a main board and different
daughtercards among these, a CPU card, a Display card, a Radio
Transceiver card, an interface wiring card and a remote Battery
Monitor unit.
The main board puts on disposal an USB communication
interface for data link with a personal computer and different
analog and digital input/output signals to interface with external
sensors, units and chopper or HF switching battery charger
systems.
The Radio Transceiver card is able to set up a bidirectional data
communication with remote units.
The SIRIUS controller bases it's functioning on a microcontroller
logic that apply all the functions and controls. To increase the
reliability of the unit, the correct microprocessor functioning is
monitored by an internal watchdog and an external supervisory
and watchdog circuitry independent on the microcontroller. Also,
to guarantee the interruption of the charging cycle after 12 hours
working, even in conditions of a microcontroller fault, the control
board is completed with a dedicated, autonomous electronic
circuitry, fully independent on the microcontroller, able to operate
the specific mentioned function.
5. The controller unit shows in the graphic display all the real-time
measures as battery voltage, charging current, system output
power, initial charging cycle time, timed charging cycle time and
Ah charging capacity.
Besides a standard control of a conventional charging process,
applying a voltage control followed by a timer control, the control
unit is able to activate additional automatic end-charge controls
checking recharged Ahs and minimum charging current. The
charging process ends correctly when one of the previous
automatic control is satisfied.
When the SIRIUS controller unit does not work in stand alone
configuration, but is completed with the Radio Transceiver card
and the remote Battery Monitor unit, it is possible to realize an
efficient charging system able to consider the real discharging
process supported by the battery. The Battery Monitor unit
calculates the actual Ah capacity discharged and communicates
to the controller unit the exact Ah capacity to recharge in the
charging cycle.
The controller board is able to check the active alarms during the
charging process and points out to the user reporting in a special
menu of the display. At last, is able to save in a dedicated
memory all the data of the charging cycles correctly completed or
interrupted to generate a database necessary to evaluate the
battery charger use and batteries condition.
6. The Battery Monitor unit, accommodated in the fork-lift battery
boot, controls and monitors the entire discharging process,
measuring, in real time, battery parameters such as voltage,
discharging current, temperature and calculating battery
autonomy, Ah capacity discharged and Ah capacity to recharge.
During the normal operation of the fork-lift, the Battery Monitor
unit is able to communicate to an on-board computer transmitting
the previous parameters, for example the battery autonomy, and,
in case of recharge, is able to communicate to the battery charger
the right charging parameters, such as Ah capacity to recharge,
to set properly the equipment. During the charging process, the
Battery Monitor unit measures continuously the battery
temperature, and, in case of high temperature, communicate to
the battery charger setting to reduce the charging current; if the
temperature doesn't decrease, the remote unit transmit to the
battery charger to stop the process.
The communication to the battery charger is wireless, to the on-
board computer could be wireless or wired.
The USB communication interface is supplied with aspecificr
software that allows the programming andsetting of all the battery
charger parameters, thecalibration of the voltage/current
measuring circuitry, the control of the communication interfaces,
thecharging cycles data download and the functionality ofdata
analysis and reportage.
