Sinus Headache Relieving Sinus Pressure
A person can get a sinus headache when the membranes of the sinuses (the air-filled cavities around
the nose, eyes, and cheeks) become swollen and inflamed. The symptoms that may accompany a
sinus headache include: sinus pain and pressure in the cheek, brow or forehead sinus pain and
pressure that increases when leaning forward or lying down nasal discharge (yellow-green or blood-
tinged in color) sore throat fever cough fatigue feeling of pressure and pain in the upper teeth
Severe Sinus Headache vs. Migraine Symptom ? What?s the Difference?
How does a headache sufferer know whether the pain is related to sinus headache or is a migraine
headache symptom? Migraine pain can be confused with sinus pain and pressure because the
symptoms do overlap. According to the Mayo Clinic website, more than 90 percent of people who say
they have ?sinus headaches? actually have the symptoms of migraine.
Here are the similar symptoms of migraine and symptoms of sinus headache:
The pain gets worse when a person bends forward. There can be nasal symptoms, such as
congestion, pressure in the face and a clear, watery nasal discharge. The difference between a
migraine symptom and sinus pressure is that a migraine can have nausea and vomiting
accompanying it. The migraine sufferer is also often sensitive to noise or bright light. These
symptoms do not usually accompany a sinus headache. Home Treatments for Relieving Sinus
Pressure
The following steps can offer sinus pressure relief and ease the pain of severe sinus headache:
Use a humidifier (if the indoor air is dry, adding moisture can help prevent the infections that lead to
sinus headache ? be sure to clean the humidifier regularly). Use a saline nasal spray. Inhale steam
two to four times a day. (This can be done by sitting in the bathroom with the shower running hot
water.) Avoid irritants such as cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoke. These kinds of irritants can cause the
sinus membranes to swell. Get quick treatment for allergy and asthma attacks. Sometimes a
doctor?s care is needed in order to get the medications needed to treat the underlying sinus
infection. When should a person with a sinus headache go see a doctor? The Mayo Clinic website
recommends that sinus headache sufferers see the doctor if: The sinus pain and pressure lasts more
than 10 days. It is a severe sinus headache, and over-the-counter pain medicines are not useful in
relieving sinus pressure. If a fever greater than 100.5 F is present. For more information:
