The Civil Services Examination involves 3 stages: 1. A preliminary test consisting of objective questions with negative marking held in August. 2. The main examination consisting of essay-type papers held in December/January. 3. A personality test or interview held in April in New Delhi. The main examination consists of 9 compulsory papers testing language skills, general studies, an essay, and two optional subjects. The preliminary test aims to shortlist candidates and consists of two papers on general studies and an aptitude test.

Paper VI - General Studies -250 Marks –Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity,

Paper VIII and IX –Optional Subject-250 +250 Marks
Sub Total-written test - (2350-600)=1750

COMPULSORY SUBJECTS: ENGLISH AND INDIAN LANGUAGUES
The aim of the paper is to test the candidate's ability to read and understand
serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas clearly and correctly in English/
Indian language concerned.
The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows :-
