The Civil Services Examination involves 3 stages:
1. A preliminary test consisting of objective questions with negative marking held in August.
2. The main examination consisting of essay-type papers held in December/January.
3. A personality test or interview held in April in New Delhi.
The main examination consists of 9 compulsory papers testing language skills, general studies, an essay, and two optional subjects. The preliminary test aims to shortlist candidates and consists of two papers on general studies and an aptitude test.

The WBCS exam is divided into three parts: the preliminary exam, the main exam, and the personal interview. The aim of the paper is to test the candidate's ability to read and understand
serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas clearly and correctly in English/
Indian language concerned.
