Leveraging Open Source Automated Data Science Tools

The data science process seeks to transform and empower organizations by finding and exploiting market inefficiencies and potentially hidden opportunities, but this is often an expensive, tedious process. However, many steps can be automated to provide a streamlined experience for data scientists. Eduardo Arino de la Rubia explores the tools being created by the open source community to free data scientists from tedium, enabling them to work on the high-value aspects of insight creation and impact validation. The promise of the automated statistician is almost as old as statistics itself. From the creations of vast tables, which saved the labor of calculation, to modern tools which automatically mine datasets for correlations, there has been a considerable amount of advancement in this field. Eduardo compares and contrasts a number of open source tools, including TPOT and auto-sklearn for automated model generation and scikit-feature for feature generation and other aspects of the data science workflow, evaluates their results, and discusses their place in the modern data science workflow. Along the way, Eduardo outlines the pitfalls of automated data science and applications of the “no free lunch” theorem and dives into alternate approaches, such as end-to-end deep learning, which seek to leverage massive-scale computing and architectures to handle automatic generation of features and advanced models.

To get started with machine learning, one must first obtain data. With the data, create a simple baseline model and evaluate its performance against a naive approach. Then build increasingly complex models, evaluating each one to ensure it outperforms previous models. The goal is to improve performance until adding more complexity no longer yields gains, all while properly validating models on unseen data to ensure generalization.

Automated testing is also a powerful tool for improving communication between software engineers. This is important because good communication is a prerequisite for growing a great software engineering organization. This workshop will explore the continuous testing of software systems. Special focus will be given to the situation where the engineering team is deploying code to production so frequently that it is not possible to perform deep regression testing before each release. People who participate in this course will learn pragmatic automated testing strategies like: * Data analysis on the command line with find, grep and wc. * Network analysis with Chrome Inspector, Charles and netcat. * Using code churn to predict hotspots where bugs may occur. * Putting stack traces in context with automated SCM blame emails. * Using statsd to instrument a whole application. * Testing in production. * Monitoring-as-testing. Technical level: participants should have some familiarity with the command line and with editing code using a text editor or IDE. Familiarity with Git, SVN or another version control system is helpful but not required. Likewise some knowledge of Web servers is helpful but not required. It is desirable for participants to bring laptops. BIO From 2010 to 2012 Noah was a Test Architect at Etsy. He helped build Etsy's continuous integration system, and has helped countless other engineers develop successful automated testing strategies.These days Noah is an independent consultant in New York. He is passionate about helping engineers understand and use automated tools as they work to scale their applications more effectively.

Genomics and Health data is nowadays one of the hot topics requiring lots of computations and specially machine learning. This helps science with a very relevant societal impact to get even better outcome. That is why Apache Spark and its ADAM library is a must have. This talk will be twofold. First, we'll show how Apache Spark, MLlib and ADAM can be plugged all together to extract information from even huge and wide genomics dataset. Everything will be packed into examples from the Spark Notebook, showing how bio-scientists can work interactively with such a system. Second, we'll explain how these methodologies and even the datasets themselves can be shared at very large scale between remote entities like hospitals or laboratories using micro services leveraging Apache Spark, ADAM, Play Framework 2, Avro and Tachyon.

Invited talk at MIT CSAIL, March 8 2016 Information extraction (IE), the task of extracting structured information from unstructured or semi-structured data, is increasingly important to a wide array of enterprise applications, ranging from Business Intelligence to Data-as-a-Service. Such applications drive the following main requirements for IE systems: accuracy, scalability, expressivity, transparency, and customizability. SystemT, a declarative IE system, has been designed and developed to address these requirements. It is based on the basic principle underlying relational database technology: complete separation of specification from execution. SystemT uses a declarative language for expressing NLP algorithms called AQL, and an optimizer that generates high-performance algebraic execution plans for AQL rules. It makes IE orders of magnitude more scalable and easy to use, maintain and customize. SystemT ships today with multiple products across 4 IBM Software Brands. Furthermore, SystemT is used in multiple ongoing research projects and being taught in universities. Our ongoing research and development efforts focus on making SystemT more usable for both technical and business users, and continuing enhancing its core functionalities based on natural language processing, machine learning, and database technology.

Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security. Paper Link: https://eprint.iacr.org/2024/257

Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability. Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization. This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
