Subject and Predicate
Every complete sentence is made up of two main parts: the subject and the predicate. These work together to express a complete thought.
Subject – This tells who or what the sentence is about. It usually includes a noun or pronoun.
Example: The cat sleeps on the couch.
(The cat is the subject – it tells who the sentence is about.)
Predicate – This tells what the subject does or what happens to the subject. It usually begins with a verb.
Example: The cat sleeps on the couch.
(sleeps on the couch is the predicate – it tells what the subject does.)
