This document provides an overview of PROFINET Real-Time (RT) and Isochronous Real-Time (IRT) communication. RT communication allows for deterministic data transfer with cycle times under 10ms, while IRT enables even faster synchronized cycles under 1ms through reserved bandwidth. IRT requires special hardware and configuration of synchronous OBs and IO devices to ensure precise synchronization for applications like motion control and high-speed measuring. Examples of IRT uses include synchronizing a saw axis to a feed axis, time-stamped box length measurement on a conveyor, and precise hydraulic pressure control.
