This document provides examples of short vowel sounds and consonant sounds in the English language. It lists common words that contain the vowel sounds /ɪ/, /e/, /æ/, /ʌ/, and /ə/ as well as the consonant sounds /p/, /b/, /t/, and /d/. Each sound is defined by an example word shown in parentheses next to the phonetic symbol. Accompanying each sound are 3-4 additional words that contain that specific sound to demonstrate how it is used in speech.
