Why Do Management Practices Differ across Firms and Countries?GOOD Intelligence
How Can Management Practices Be Measured?
To measure management practices, we have developed a new survey methodology described in detail in Bloom and Van Reenen (2007). We use an interview-based evaluation tool that defifi nes and scores from 1 (“worst practice”) to 5 (“best practice”)
This report is designed to help social entrepreneurs benchmark their organisation against fellow social enterprises in Sweden. We hope the report can help social enterprises to better place their organisation (e.g. what makes it distinct; readily spot differences and similarities with their peers). The report will also be useful for support organisations and policy makers to obtain an overview of social enterprises in Sweden. If this report can be put to any other good uses, we would be most delighted. Of course a rich database like ours contains many more insights and policy implications, which will soon be published on www.seforis.eu.

Objective : Assess political, legal, cultural, and economic influences on international business
that may affect your global product/service.
Background: A country\'s business environment may be influenced by the importance of family,
religious beliefs and demographic trends. It is useful to gain social and cultural awareness about
the country you are considering for your global product/service.
In addition, political stability is commonly related to the type of government and degree of
corruption present in a country. A company my also face various business regulations and legal
constraints that could affect global business decisions.
Globalization Case Study:
You are a senior executive of a firm that is seeking to expand globally. The Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) has tasked you to develop a Business Plan (see Global Business Plan Activities).
During this case study, be thinking of a product or service which you may wish to be the focus of
your Business Plan.
For Activity #2, the CEO asked you to study national differences and political economics
associated with the Business Plan.
For your selected global product or service, assess the potential markets in five parts of the
world: Argentina, Ghana, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, and one nation selected by the student.
Make a table that characterizes and briefly discusses the growth potential, political risk,
economic risk, legal risk, and cultural differences that might influence the costs of doing
business in the country. Also address cultural considerations that might affect the firm’s business
practices in the country and the overall attractiveness of the country for your company\'s
product/service.

Growth Potential that might influence the cost of doing business in the country
In the current economic climate, growth remains a key government priority. The literature on
economic growth has turned to the effects of country\'s political, legal, economic and social
institutions on wealth and long-term growth (Acemoglu et al. (Acemoglu et al., 2001 and
Acemoglu et al., November 2002), Dollar and Kraay (Dollar & Kraay, 2003), Easterly and
Levine (Easterly & Levine, 1997), Hall and Jones (Hall Robert & Jones Charles, 1999), Knack
and Keefer (Knack & Keefer, 1995), Mauro (Mauro, 1995), Rodrik et al. (R, A, & Trebbi, 2002),
and many others). It is obvious that countries with better institutions grow faster. However, as
noted by Rodrik et al. (Hanusch, 30 June 2011), it is difficult to identify which institutions matter
and how does one acquire them. This is a question of some practical importance. In recent years,
the proliferation of datasets aiming to measure a wide gamut of institutional reforms allowed
economists to make progress in this area. In this context, the World Bank has been publishing a
series of annual Doing Business reports since 2004 investigating regulations that enhance
business activi.

Purpose
- The purpose of this paper is to introduce the global value chain (GVC) approach to understand the relationship between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and the changing patterns of global trade, investment and production, and its impact on economic and social upgrading. It aims to illuminate how GVCs can advance our understanding about MNEs and rising power (RP) firms and their impact on economic and social upgrading in fragmented and dispersed global production systems.
Design/methodology/approach
- The paper reviews the GVC literature focusing on two conceptual elements of the GVC approach, governance and upgrading, and highlights three key recent developments in GVCs: concentration, regionalization and synergistic governance.
Findings
- The paper underscores the complicated role of GVCs in shaping economic and social upgrading for emerging economies, RP firms and developing country firms in general. Rising geographic and organizational concentration in GVCs leads to the uneven distribution of upgrading opportunities in favor of RP firms, and yet economic upgrading may be elusive even for the most established suppliers because of power asymmetry with global buyers. Shifting end markets and the regionalization of value chains can benefit RP firms by presenting alternative markets for upgrading. Yet, without further upgrading, such benefits may be achieved at the expense of social downgrading. Finally, the ineffectiveness of private standards to achieve social upgrading has led to calls for synergistic governance through the cooperation of private, public and social actors, both global and local.
Originality/value
- The paper illuminates how the GVC approach and its key concepts can contribute to the critical international business and RP firms literature by examining the latest dynamics in GVCs and their impacts on economic and social development in developing countries.

Abstract Even though potential impacts of political and
legal environments of business on ethical behavior of firms
(EBOF) have been conceptually recognized, not much
evidence (i.e., empirical work) has been produced to clarify
their role. In this paper, using Bayesian causal maps
(BCMs) methodology, relationships between legal and
political environments of business and EBOF are investi-
gated. The unique design of our study allows us to analyze
these relationships based on the stages of development in
92 countries around the world. The EBOF models struc-
tured through BCMs are used to explain how EBOF in a
given country group are shaped by how managers perceive
political, legislative, and protective environments of busi-
ness in these countries. The results suggest that irregular
payments and bribes are the most influential factors
affecting managers’ perceptions of business ethics in rel-
atively more advanced economies, whereas intellectual
property protection is the most influential factor affecting
managers’ perceptions of business ethics in less-advanced
economies. The results also suggest that regardless of
where the business is conducted in the world, judicial
independence is the driving force behind managers’ per-
ceptions of business ethics. In addition, the results of this
study provide further support for scholars who argue that
business ethics is likely to vary among countries based on
their socio-economic factors. In addition to its managerial
implications, the study provides directions for policy
makers to improve the ethical conduct of businesses in
their respective countries.

Surface integrity is defined as the inherent or enhanced condition of a surface produced by
machining or other generating operation. It contains not only the geometry consideration,
including surface roughness and accuracy, but also another surface/subsurface microstructure.
The success of the transformation is dependent on a number of variables such as surface
texture, wetting properties of the solid surface by the liquid and coating viscosity. Coatings
and painting applied to the surface; the purpose of such operations may be to improve their
chemical and mechanical properties. The existence of the correct functional groups in an
accessible position is an important factor to be identified and controlled. Thus, surfaces are
produced with a texture resembling a landscape, the determination and control the surface
area and surface composition are essential for the study of catalysts, even small variation of
properties may lead to unwanted results in production and can cause the rejection of the batch.
It is useful to modify the surface performance when it does not possess the specified
requisites; it is possible to change mechanical or visual properties of surfaces improvement
in sliding, thermal properties, corrosion, adhesion, wear, yield and appearance.
The wide variety of parameters that used in the characterization of surface finishing is a piece
of evidence of its magnitude. The characterization of surface finishing is usually
accomplished defining numerical 3D surface texture parameters (ISO-25178). Today
selections of appropriate parameters for analyzing the surfaces are widely investigated. The
detailed study about the surface (relation between manufacturing processes, directionality
etc.) by using the selected parameters is also highlighted of this study.
