Early recurrence was defi ned based on unit protocol as evidence of recurrent disease on follow-up imaging within one year of surgery.Methods: From January 2012 to December 2016, 133 patients with CRLM underwent liver resection in our Unit; 115 patients followed up for at least a year were eligible. We analysed pre-operative variables (sex, age, BMI, comorbidities, CEA and Liver function tests (LFTs), lesion number, size of largest liver lesion, neoadjuvant chemotherapy), operative variables (anatomical vs non-anatomical, major vs minor, redo liver surgery, concomitant use of ablation techniques, blood loss, blood transfusions, Pringle’s manoeuvre), and post-operative variables (complications, length of hospital stay, histological parameters) were analysed.

All 41 donors have returned to normal activities with few complications, demonstrating the safety of the procedure when performed in an experienced center.

The expansion in Liver Transplantation (LT) selection criteria for
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) has shown acceptable results in
survival rate and tumor recurrence. Historical analysis of the results shows that the path taken so far is correct; however, there
are still doubts about the limit of this expansion. The acquisition
of new selection tools that measure the biological behavior of the
tumor, instead of the historic and simple preoperative morphological analysis, has been gaining strength in this expansion. In this
context, analyzing the ethical perspective in the use of grafts from
living donors is essential in order to seek a risk vs. benefit balance
for both donor and recipient.
Volume overhydration in dialysis patients
This study examined the relationship between volume overhydration and endothelial dysfunction in 81 stable patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Volume status was assessed by normalized extracellular water and endothelial function was estimated by flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery. There was an independent correlation between the index of volume status (normalized extracellular water) and endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation), with higher normalized extracellular water related to worse endothelial function. Multiple regression analysis identified calcium-phosphate product, normalized extracellular water, and dialysis vintage as independent determinants of endothelial function. The results suggest that volume overhydration may lead to increased cardiovascular risk in dialysis patients through its effects on endothelial dysfunction.

hospital for nausea, vomiting and one episode of mild hematuria
for 1 week. He was afebrile at presentation. Urinalysis was negative.
There was no leukocytosis on admission. His renal function tests
were within normal limits. CT scan (with contrast) of the abdomen

epicenter in the superior pole of the left kidney showing extension

MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS
One of the tenets of cell theory is that all cells come from pre-existing cells. All individual
organisms begins with one cell, and yet in multicellular organisms the number of cells in the
adult may be in the trillions. This requires cells to repeatedly divide during the life of an
organism.
The average adult human body is made up of about 37 trillion cells. Of these, approximately 50
billion are fat cells and 2 billion are heart muscle cells. By the time you finish reading this
sentence, 50 million of your cells will have died and been replaced by others. Human cells are
estimated to divide nearly 2 trillion times every day. Amazingly, humans contain at least 10
times as many bacteria cells as human cells. The 100 trillion bacterial cells are much smaller
than human cells and have a faster generation time.
Mitosis and meiosis are two processes that produce new cells through cell division, which occurs
as a part of the cell cycle. The new “daughter” cells produced by these processes are quite
different because they have different purposes. These differences occur because the processes
have several key differences as outlined in the video lecture. You will be doing several lab
activities examining mitosis and meiosis and what can happen if problems occur during these
cell division processes.
Why are we doing this lab?
1. To gain a better understanding of the mitotic and meiotic processes of cell division that
occur in humans and all other animals.
2. To examine how issues in mitosis and meiosis can lead to diseases and disorders in

The expansion in Liver Transplantation (LT) selection criteria for
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) has shown acceptable results in
survival rate and tumor recurrence. Historical analysis of the results shows that the path taken so far is correct; however, there
are still doubts about the limit of this expansion. The acquisition
of new selection tools that measure the biological behavior of the
tumor, instead of the historic and simple preoperative morphological analysis, has been gaining strength in this expansion. In this
context, analyzing the ethical perspective in the use of grafts from
living donors is essential in order to seek a risk vs. benefit balance
for both donor and recipient.
Volume overhydration in dialysis patients
This study examined the relationship between volume overhydration and endothelial dysfunction in 81 stable patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Volume status was assessed by normalized extracellular water and endothelial function was estimated by flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery. There was an independent correlation between the index of volume status (normalized extracellular water) and endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation), with higher normalized extracellular water related to worse endothelial function. Multiple regression analysis identified calcium-phosphate product, normalized extracellular water, and dialysis vintage as independent determinants of endothelial function. The results suggest that volume overhydration may lead to increased cardiovascular risk in dialysis patients through its effects on endothelial dysfunction.

A 24-year-oldAfrican American man with history of polycystic
kidney disease, autism and schizophrenia was admitted to our
hospital for nausea, vomiting and one episode of mild hematuria
for 1 week. He was afebrile at presentation. Urinalysis was negative.
There was no leukocytosis on admission. His renal function tests
were within normal limits. CT scan (with contrast) of the abdomen
was acquired showing innumerable bilateral renal cysts (Figure 1).
One of which measured 4.5 x 5.2 cm as a heterogeneous mass with
epicenter in the superior pole of the left kidney showing extension
into renal hilum. This was most concerning for RCC.

Supply and demand are so important for both consumers and producers
because both of these concepts work together to determine the overall price

MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS
One of the tenets of cell theory is that all cells come from pre-existing cells. All individual
organisms begins with one cell, and yet in multicellular organisms the number of cells in the
adult may be in the trillions. This requires cells to repeatedly divide during the life of an
organism.
The average adult human body is made up of about 37 trillion cells. Of these, approximately 50
billion are fat cells and 2 billion are heart muscle cells. By the time you finish reading this
sentence, 50 million of your cells will have died and been replaced by others. Human cells are
estimated to divide nearly 2 trillion times every day. Amazingly, humans contain at least 10
times as many bacteria cells as human cells. The 100 trillion bacterial cells are much smaller
than human cells and have a faster generation time.
Mitosis and meiosis are two processes that produce new cells through cell division, which occurs
as a part of the cell cycle. The new “daughter” cells produced by these processes are quite
different because they have different purposes. These differences occur because the processes
have several key differences as outlined in the video lecture. You will be doing several lab
activities examining mitosis and meiosis and what can happen if problems occur during these
cell division processes.
Why are we doing this lab?
1. To gain a better understanding of the mitotic and meiotic processes of cell division that
occur in humans and all other animals.
2. To examine how issues in mitosis and meiosis can lead to diseases and disorders in

To determine the undrained shear strength of a soil using the triaxial compression test.
Theory/Apparatus:
The apparatus consists of a cell, which is filled with water under pressure; the
specimen is loaded vertically, via a proving ring to measure load.
Triaxial Cell
The vertical load on the specimen is increased until failure occurs, the vertical strain
being recorded at the same time using a dial gauge. The test is repeated on different
specimens from the same soil, using different values of cell pressure.

Who was Edward Bernays?
Born in Vienna in 1891, distant nephew of Sigmund Freud
His approach to public relations was to use symbols and the mass media to engineer consent
He claimed the public was essentially reactive
But the rise of the middle class meant that there was no longer the ruling class and the uneducated masses who followed dumbly . . .
What did he believe?
This emerging new social strata needed to be controlled and led.
He believed in a completely hierarchical view of society: the intelligent few have been charged with the responsibility of contemplating and influencing the tide of history and of dealing with the masses.
How did he deal with the masses?
Used sociology, psychology and economics and applied them to the messages and methods
He saw the PR expert as an applied social scientist educated to use an understanding of these three fields to influence and direct public attitudes (in a democratic society!)

For Bernays, PR was about creating and projecting credible renditions of reality itself.
He called news any overt act which stands out of the routine.
A PR expert carries out an overt act to interrupt the routine to bring out a response.
PR is the science of creating circumstances which do not appear to be staged.

- 2. concomitant scarcity of cadaveric livers have increased the need for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Ensuring the safety of donors and recipients is critical. The preoperative identifica- tion of the vascular and biliary tract anatomy with 3- dimensional (3D) printing may allow better preoperative surgical plan- ning, avert unnecessary surgery in patients with potentially unsuitable anatomy, and thereby decrease the complications of liver transplant surgery. We developed a protocol and successfully 3D-printed synthetic livers (along with their complex net- works of vascular and biliary structures) replicating the native livers of 6 patients: 3 living donors and 3 respective recipients who underwent LDLT. To our knowledge, these are the first complete 3D-printed livers. Using standardized preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative assessments, we demonstrated identical anatomical and geometrical landmarks in the 3D-printed models and native livers. A 3D printer works as an ordinary office printer, but instead of placing a single layer of ink on paper, the machine lays down successive thin layers of a material to form a 3D object that replicates the original one.1 The growing demand for liver transplantation and the concomitant shortage of cadaveric livers have led to a rise in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), in which resection of the right or left liver lobe is per- formed for the purpose of liver transplantation.2 Liv- ing donors are healthy individuals, so ensuring their safety is of paramount importance. There have been a number of reported donor deaths worldwide and a substantial number of donor morbidities, so there is a need for measures to optimize donor safety.3 Many of these morbidities are attributable to incomplete pre- operative anatomical characterization of vascular and biliary structures and inaccurate estimates of the liver volume; these data are needed to determine the extent of the resection. This information provides a road map, and its accuracy has improved with the intro- duction of radiological software able to provide 3D visualization of liver structures.4,5

Additionally, the intraoperative application of preoperative 3D image findings is still difficult because of the absence of reliable liver surface markers corresponding to hepatic segmentation. Liver deformity after mobilization during surgery has been a major obstacle to the reliable use of preoperative 3D imaging data; hence, intraoperative modalities such as ultrasonography and cholangiography are often
- 6. used for the localization of vessels and major biliary branches. Our attempt to produce a highly accurate 3D-printed model of a patient’s liver is intended to overcome these obstacles and improve the safety of LDLT. The accurate anatomical reproduction of the donor liver represents progress in existing 3D imaging technology and may enhance patient outcomes. The aim of this novel study was to establish ana- tomical precision and volumetric accuracy in 3D- printed models for donors and recipients undergoing LDLT. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients After receiving an approval from the Institutional Review Board at the Cleveland Clinic, we prospectively studied 3 consecutive patient pairs (3 donors and 3 recipients) who were evaluated and approved for LDLT at the Cleveland Clinic between November 2012 and May 2013. The donors and the recipients under- went standardized preoperative evaluations, which included contrast-enhanced CT and MRI examina-
- 7. tions of the abdomen. These standardized images were required for an analysis of morphological charac- teristics and the vascular and biliary anatomy and for an evaluation of the hepatic parenchyma. Addition- ally, CT volumetric measurements of the entire donor liver and both its lobes were taken with CT postpro- cessing software (Medical Image Editor Thomas Lange, B.S., Deutsches Herzzentrum, Berlin, Ger- many). Using information from these imaging modal- ities, we obtained comparative data for the donor and recipient livers, including the volumes, lengths, widths, and heights of the whole livers and their lobes. Anatomical details, including the diameters of the main portal vein, left hepatic vein, right hepatic vein, and biliary tree, were also recorded. Demo- graphic and clinical characteristics of the donors and recipients at the time of surgery (age, sex, ethnicity, weight, height, and body mass index) were also recorded. 3D Printing The overall process of 3D printing included 3D image reconstruction, digital preparation, 3D printing, and postprinting finishing work.
