This poem is about unrequited love and letting someone go for their happiness. In three sentences: The speaker has known their friend for years but has developed romantic feelings for them, however their friend has now grown closer to another person who supports and cares for them, so the speaker chooses to set aside their own feelings and let their friend be happy even though it causes them pain.

I’ve known her for four years now
I’ll love her forever, I vow
But then you came in between our life.
You’ve known me for years, you’ve known her for months
But she is already closer to your heart
You talk to her like you know her all your life
And it gives pain to my foolish heart.
She was hurt, you came to her
She was crying, you dried her tears
She was afraid, you removed her fears
She was broken, you lent your ears.
As she cried, you never left her side
You didn’t know I was also in pain inside
All along I pretended to be alright
But when I’m alone, a river of tears I cried.
You think she’s weak, do you really think so?
I say she’s stronger more than you ever know
‘Cause she can tell you directly she loves you
While I can’t, it’ll forever be a secret to you.

2. Oh first love, why do you have to be so hard?
I thought you are sweet, but you’re painful and sad
It breaks my heart but I can’t be mad
‘Cause you were two special people I had.
I learned to set aside my feeling,
Learned to give up without even fighting
I didn’t know if I had a chance of winning
Or I was afraid that both of you, I’ll end up losing.
I gave you up because she was there
I gave you up because you were happy with her
All the pain, I could still bear
And I know someday, I will recover.
She’s a good person, I know that
And she’s just so perfect to be your half
Your eyes sparkle when she laughs
And I know I was right when I gave up.
She can make you happy, can take care of you
She can understand the negative acts you do
She can accept the dark side of you
She can love you and hurting you never will she do.
