This document discusses trends in digital media and their implications. It begins by looking at the current landscape of digital media and how the business model is changing. Specifically, it notes that consumers now have a more active purchase journey involving research across various online sources. It then discusses that brands need to focus on influence rather than control online by investing in relationships and trust. The final implication is that the less control a brand has, the greater influence it can achieve through various participatory digital channels.
This document discusses trends in internet and mobile data usage in South Africa. It notes that internet users grew 25% from 2010 to 2011, and are forecast to reach 10 million users by 2012. Mobile data revenue was up 19.3% year-on-year for one mobile provider, while data prices dropped 22%. The number of active data users and smartphones also increased significantly from 2011 to 2012. It argues that lower mobile termination rates forced by regulators in other African countries have led to cheaper mobile prices compared to South Africa.
This report uses six case studies to understand how researchers in the humanities find, access, use and share information. Centred around users of a resource, members of a department or participants within a research field, each case presents several viewpoints on the changing nature of research.
It is clear that new information behaviours are developing. Researchers make increasing use of digital resources, and are collaborating in more open configurations. However, some challenges remain, and researchers are not always able to make the most of the new tools that are available to them.

With the rise of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn etc.) many nonprofits are exploring new ways of fundraising, advocating, and conducting outreach online. This workshop will help participants understand how effective multi-channel online communications work, using examples from health industry nonprofits and more. Our emphasis won't be on technical 'how tos', but rather strategies, with particular emphasis on the question of return on investment from the nonprofit CEO's point of view. We'll also talk about staff capacity, social media policies, the CEO's role in social media, time, and budgeting.
Geographic information systems (GIS) help visualize location data through digital maps and charts. GIS has its origins in maps from Babylonian times but the first true GIS was created in 1962 in Ottawa, Canada. It integrated data from government agencies. Today, GIS is used widely, from helping find directions to analyzing business issues like customer bases or transportation routes. GIS represents data as either raster grids of cells or vector shapes like points, lines, and polygons. This allows continuous data like temperature or discrete data like buildings to be mapped and analyzed.

The Mexican Mural Movement, led by Diego Rivera, celebrated Mexican nationalism through large scale murals depicting scenes of daily life. Important artists included Frida Kahlo, known for her introspective self-portraits.
Developing media literacy indicators for EuropeMonica Bulger
This document discusses testing and refining criteria to assess media literacy levels in Europe. It outlines the objectives to develop a tool to measure media literacy across age groups and countries. The approach includes reviewing literature, validating measures statistically, testing the tools, and providing recommendations. It identifies challenges in connecting individual and country-level measures and in measuring critical media analysis. The process of validation involves mapping indicators to data, identifying gaps and redundancies, and proposing a more focused set of variables. Recommendations include additional measures of credibility evaluation and critical understanding.
