William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor who lived from 1564 to 1616. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Shakespeare wrote approximately 38 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as several other poems, and his works have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
