Editor's Notes

  1. Body mass index is the measure of some ones weight in relation to their height. A person who is normal weight will have a BMI between the 5th and 85th percentile, an overweight person would have a BMI between the 85th and 95th percentile, a obese person would have a BMI above the 95th percentile.
  2. Kids diets are getting worse. more and more kids are eating fast food as their meals instead of a home cooked meal because fast food is so available . A McDonalds salad may sound healthy to some but a premium bacon ranch salad with grilled chicken with dressing has 430 calories 24g of fat and 1540mg of sodium. Kids aren’t getting enough exercise to use up all of the calories they intake, for some gym class is the only form of exercise they get and gym classes are being cut down.
  3. In today’s society children are becoming less active and more sedentary. They most likely will go home after school and grab an unhealthy snack such as chips, candy, or other food that have a lot of unhealthy stuff such as high fructose corn syrup then either watch TV or play videogames, sometimes for 7 or 8 hours at a time. Some companies such as Wii have come out with Wii fit which promotes exercise and moving around.
  4. Obesity can cause problems such as type 2 diabetes and low self esteem. Diabetes is when your body has too much glucose in your blood. Diabetes can lead to a number of other health problems such as nerve damage to the foot which affects the blood flow to the whole leg, this causes blisters and cuts that become infected and the leg has to be amputated. Obesity can also cause low self esteem which is when you don’t value yourself.
  5. Obesity can also cause high blood pressure which can lead to strokes or heart attacks. A heart attack happens when a clot is formed in an artery blocking the blood from getting to the heart. A stroke is an interruption in the blood flow to any part of the brain.
  6. Mrs. Obama’s program focuses on families and the community and what they can do in order to fight what experts are now calling an epidemic. She says isn’t about weight but rather the fitness and overall nutrition. Some of the things that the lets move campaign will do is provide schools with healthier lunches, help kids become more active, and make healthy food affordable throughout the country
  7. Schools are starting to focus more on life long fitness activities such as yoga, biking, and dance. West Babylon High School in New York has added new classes to its elective courses such as hip hop dancing class. This is an attempt to get students more active. There is a rock wall that that students can use along with the new weight room where students can learn the proper way to work out with weights or resistance bands. Lou Howard, the director of health, physical education and athletics for the school district, said: “Only 15 to 18 percent of the kids in school are athletes. That leaves out the rest. We are trying to target the non-athletes and move away from the sports model.”
  8. 30 years ago everyone was required to take gym no matter what, it benefitted everyone even if they were athletic. Today the gym classes are being reduced across the nation and it has shown. The number of overweight kids has increased drastically over the years. A recent fitness test in California showed that 77% of 5th 7th and 9th graders failed the test.
  9. Dan Latham, a gym teacher at West Middle School in Downey Calif. Has turned a seldom used athletic storage building into an aerobics facility for the kids to work out. The facility has computers incorporated into the machines to give them a videogame feeling that attracts kids. The machines that have the video game component require the students to be moving for the screens to turn on.
  10. There are many different things you can do to exercise. Some of it doesn’t even have to feel like a workout. There are three main focuses, strength training, flexibility, and cardio.
  11. A cardio workout works your heart and is a great way to get in shape. You can be doing a cardio workout and not even know it, you can play a game of tag with friends, run, jump rope, or even swimming is a great cardio workout. Basically anything that gets your heart above its resting heart rate for an amount of time.
  12. Strength training can decrease the fat level in your body making it an excellent workout for anyone trying to loose weight, it also promotes strong bones, and increases self esteem. Working your upper body consists of your arms, chest, upper back, shoulder, neck. You don’t have to use weights, you can use resistance bands which are also a great workout. They are very versatile so you can do just about every workout that you can do with weights.
  13. Lower body lifting strengthens your thighs, calves, butt. A strong lower body is important for lifting things so you don’t hurt your back. A strong lower body makes everything easier from hiking to walking up stairs.
  14. Your core is the most important part of your body. You use for everything in your daily life. The core consists of your abs and lower back, you can work your abs with the traditional crunches or sit ups or even laughing is a good workout for your abs. To work your lower back you can do dead lifts, back extensions
  15. Stretching is very important to injury prevention. Stretching increases your range of motion which decreases your chance of injury because the limb can move further before its injured.
  16. You need a ball, flags, and a net
