2. What are STDs?
● Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs),
also known as sexually transmitted
infections (STIs), are very common.
Millions of new infections occur every
year in the United States. STDs pass
from one person to another through
vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
● Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
are infections transmitted from an
infected person to an uninfected
person through sexual contact. STDs
can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or
3. 1. Syphilis
• This bacterial infection can affect many areas
of the body not related to the genitals and
happens in three stages. It often starts with
sores near the groin called chancres which can
also infect the tongue and lips. As the
condition progresses, a patient can expect
reddish-brown rashes on just about any area of
the body, soreness, aching, fever, fatigue, and
enlarged lymph nodes. Left untreated, syphilis
can cause tissue damage years after the initial
infection and lead to numbness, dementia,
blindness, and paralysis.
Here are some common STDs to look out for:
4. • Chlamydia is another bacterial
infection that may be hard to detect in
its early stages as it may be
asymptomatic. Between one to three
weeks a patient may experience
painful urination, lower abdominal
pain, a smelly penile or vaginal
discharge, testicular pain, pain during
intercourse, and bleeding between
menstrual periods.
2. Chlamydia
5. • Another STD that may be
asymptomatic once infected,
gonorrhea can also affect unborn
children of infected mothers.
Gonorrhea has many similar
symptoms to chlamydia and syphilis
(painful urination, pelvic pain, and
bleeding between periods) but the
discharge from gonorrhea may be
painful and pus-like. It may also
cause swelling in the testicles.
Gonorrhea may also affect the
rectum, eyes, throat, and joints.
3. Gonorrhea
6. 4. Human
Papillomavirus
(HPV)
• HPV is a viral infection that can
cause warts that could
potentially lead to cancer. The
types of infection that can
cause cancer may affect the
genitals (vulva, cervix, or
penis), anus, and throat. HPV
can be contracted from skin
contact as well as through sex.
7. 5. Hepatitis
● Hepatitis is the group name for
different inflammatory conditions
(usually viral infections) impacting
the liver. Typically hepatitis B and C
are the infections contracted through
sexual contact. But they can also be
contracted through contact with
infected blood by sharing needles or
razors.
9. What are
infectious
diseases?
● Infectious diseases are illnesses caused
by harmful organisms (pathogens) that
get into your body from the outside.
Pathogens that caused infectious
diseases are viruses, bacteria, fungi,
parasites and, rarely, prions. You can get
infectious diseases from other people,
bug bites and contaminated food, water
or soil.
11. Viral Infections
● Viruses are a piece of information
(DNA or RNA) inside of a
protective shell (capsid). Viruses
are much smaller than your cells
and have no way to reproduce on
their own. They get inside your
cells and use your cells’
machinery to make copies of
themselves.

15. Bacterial Infections
● Bacteria are single-celled
organisms with their
instructions written on a small
piece of DNA. Bacteria are all
around us, including inside of
our body and on our skin. Many
bacteria are harmless or even
helpful, but certain bacteria
release toxins that can make you

19. Fungal Infections
● Like bacteria, there are many
different fungi. They live on and
in your body. When your fungi
get overgrown or when harmful
fungi get into your body
through your mouth, your nose
or a cut in your skin, you can
get sick.
21. Fungal Nail Infections. Fungal nail
infections may cause nails to become
discolored, thick, fragile, or cracked.
Thrush
22. Parasitic Infections
● Parasites use the bodies of
other organisms to live and
reproduce. Parasites
include worms (helminths)
and some single-celled
organisms (protozoa).
23. Giardiasis. Giardiasis is a common
illness caused by a parasite that may result
in diarrhea and stomach cramps. The
Giardia parasite can spread through
contaminated water, food and surfaces, and
from contact with someone who has it.
Pinworms. A pinworm (“threadworm”) is
a small, thin, white roundworm (nematode)
called Enterobius vermicularis that
sometimes lives in the colon and rectum of
humans.
Common Infectious
Diseases Caused by
Parasites:
25. Transmissible Spongiform
Encephalopathies
(TSEs/prion diseases)
● TSEs are caused by prions — faulty
proteins that cause other proteins in
your body, usually in your brain, to
become faulty as well. Your body is
unable to use these proteins or get rid
of them, so they build up and make
you sick. Prions are an extremely rare
cause of infectious diseases.
