In this age of distributed computing and cheap storage in the cloud, "thinking" without a biological brain is possible for the first time in history. The sensory input into this new, extracorporeal brain is big data.
Global data supply chains carry exabytes of government, corporate, and social data powering breakthrough uses in medicine, transportation, communications, and energy. However, equally fantastic is the specter of abuses by powerful players to exploit private information, subtly discriminate, or mistakenly prosecute the innocent.
This talk discusses the current state of these data supply chains, where they are headed, and the societal implications for privacy, security, and liberty. And it calls technologists, business leaders, and humanists -- i.e., geeks, suits, and wonks -- to together resolve the tension between cultural values and fast-paced technology.

The first text message was sent in 1993 and texting volume has grown dramatically since then, with over 35 billion texts sent in 2009 and 56 billion in 2010. Studies have shown that "hyper-texters", those who send 10 or more texts per day, are more likely to engage in risky behaviors like sex, drinking, and drug use compared to their peers. Additionally, many people now prefer texting over phone calls for social interactions and people are increasingly using texting as a way to flirt and ask potential partners out, sometimes leading to sex at an earlier stage. However, texting while driving remains a major safety issue.

Is social media redefining love? That’s the theme of our latest study. We know that social media has changed the way we live—and now, we’ve discovered, it’s changing the way we love. Euro RSCG Worldwide surveyed 1,000 respondents in the United States to explore how the digital world, specifically social media, has affected their lives in the areas of love and intimacy. In this white paper, we tackle new realities in love, like the questions of whether old-fashioned matchmaking will be a job of the past (about half of those we surveyed said they knew someone whose relationship had started online) and how old is too old to search for closeness online? Has social media affected fidelity? (Our poll says yes.) Which generation is most actively using online connections to find their love connections? This study examined dating experiences of online dating users and non-users among college students. Using interviews allowed the author to directly compare experiences of those who do and do not use online dating, but interviews were time-consuming for both the interviewer and interviewees. Overall, the study aimed to expand understanding of individual experiences with online dating.
Litmus: Gender On The Net
1) A study examined differences in how men and women shop online and offline through surveys, focus groups, and usability testing.
2) The study found that while offline shopping behaviors often reflected stereotypes, online behaviors have become more similar as both genders have spent more time online.
3) However, the study still found some key differences - women tended to scan websites quickly looking at many options, while men dug deeper researching specific products. Women also went on more tangents between products while men stuck more to their mission.
The Influence of Media and Technology on Our Children

- 7.7m Tweets featured racially insensitive language, men sent 59% of these.
- You are most likely to experience cyberbullying on Twitter between 5pm-8pm on a Sunday.

This public service announcement discusses the issue of cyberbullying. It provides statistics showing that over half of kids have experienced mean or hurtful things said to them online and over 40% have experienced it more than once. Additionally, over 50% of kids admit to saying something mean online to someone else, with over a third doing it more than once. Cyberbullying can occur through various electronic means of communication and can affect both children and adults. A story is presented of a 13-year old girl who committed suicide after being cyberbullied through a fake friendship on MySpace.
