5. • Visual Style
The visual style is frantic & fast like that of an over the top
action movie, very flamboyant.
The color palette is bright on the protagonists/antagonists
to distinguish them from the wvast number “faceless”
solders you must fight in the game, who are dressed in plain
grey/white.
The camera work is mostly comprised of mid-wide shots to
capture the epic nature of the action & close ups to focus on
the intensity/emotions of the characters or to focus on the
direct impact of the action/violence.
Editing is fast paced to match the flow & speed of the action.
The editing cuts away frequently to new shots that focus on
the next occurrence of violence/action.
6. • Soundtrack
Soundtrack opens with loud rock music playing
during the opening action sequence, then switches to
old traditional Chinese tribal drums to shift the tone
to one of reverence & seriousness as it introduces
the other characters in the game, then suddenly shifts
back into loud rock, as violence begins to erupt again
7. • The ‘message’
The genre is one of a Chinese feudal war drama/action
story played in an action/warfare hack & slack game
play style.
Being an already established game series in reintroduces
us to the old characters & informs us of the latest context
of their adventures. It does this by showing us each
character in their “natural” element via a montage of
scenes. Themes consist of rivalry & nobility
8. • Gameplay
The game consists of fighting against a mass army of
soldiers with a weapon & occasionally a formidable
rival, It depicts this in the opening action scene of the
trailer but it isn’t in-game footage & provides the audi
ence with a more flamboyant/over the top depiction
of the in game action. The cast of rivals is unfurled in
the rest of trailer climaxing before the two rivals land
a blow.
9. Questions to consider:
1. how does the trailer begin and end? Was it effectively edited and why?
The trailer begins with a fast paced action scene, which immediately grabs our attention then is followed by a lull in the action
by proceeding to reintroduce the cast & then returns to action & builds up to a inconclusive climax.
2. what studio is releasing the trailer? What might you know about them and their previously released games?
Koel is releasing the trailer, they have made 6 previous Dynasty Warrior games & numerous other games also based on the
Three Kingdoms period of Chinese History
3. do trailers always tell you everything you need to know about the game? (if not, where can you get more information?)
No trailers can & will be hype builders of sort, They introduce to the setting, story, possible game content & functions but mostly
serve as a means to grab the consumers attention rather than inform. A good place to attain more info about a video game
product is to await in-game walkthrough footage provide by/for game journalists to describe online.
