National Service Scheme (NSS) was
launched on September 24, 1969 by
the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V.
Rao. The scheme was launched in 37
universities with 40,000 NSS volunteers.
NSS is a public service program
conducted by the Ministry of Youth
Affairs and Sports, Government of
India.

September, 1969, the birth centenary year of
the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24
September is celebrated every year as NSS
Day with appropriate programmes and
