Set design
- 1. Our opening sequence is divided into two parts, which will be shot in two different sets. Set 1 This set is where our first part is going to be shot. That is where our main character - the writer is introduced, when he is typing the mystery story about the murder in the office. This set will look like a study room in the house. For this set we will use reallocation rather than studio so it looks not abstract but more realistic. After the research,we decided to set our sequence in 1950s therefore,the setting should correspond the time period. This set should be quite simplistic so we can focus more on the typewriter and the words being typed. All study rooms of this period were quite similar, they had a massive table made of dark wood, typically with carving and small sliding trays. Another important aspect of this room is a big divan easy chair made of dark leather. Carpet on the the floor will also give a homely atmosphere and an old- fashioned look of the room, which we need to demonstrate a time period. In our test shot, we mostly used close-ups and medium shots of the writer and typewriter so even if we won't be able to use a carpet,it won't be a big issue because we are not going to use close ups of the writer's foots.
- 2. It will be really good, if we can use a location with bookshelf because it will fully complete an atmosphere of the room. However,even if our location doesn't have book shelves, we can still put a lot of books on the table and this will work as well. Set 2 This is where our second part is going to be shot. That is other characters- the woman and the murderer are introduce, when murder in the office, typed on the typewriter actually happens in the real life. This set will look like a small, office room of the the same time period. For this part we will also use a location, to make it clear to the audience that this murder is happening in real life, and it is not an abstract,visual reconstruction of the writer's story. Office room will be small to emphasize the concept of 'nowhere to hide and nowhere to run' and to create a creepy atmosphere. If we will be able to use a certain location with stairs, it would be perfect because it will give more levels to the setting to shoot at.
- 3. The office will also look very typical to 1950s, with typical wooden table and chair, but comparing to the first setting much more simple. The table will have many sliding trays and it will look really good if we locate big sliding trays for documents beside the table. Important thing that we will need to have on our table is a green,old fashioned study lamp which will be one (if not the only) source of light in the office as the scene take place in the night time. This sort of lamps is very typical to the time period and it will perfectly complete the setting of an office.
