The government’s economic policy is defined by five-year economic plans. China is still a relatively poor country with an estimated GDP per capita on a PPP basis of US$12,879 in 2014, lower than Thailand. Policies to increase the real incomes of China’s middle class will encourage more consumption as a share of GDP and make the economy less reliant on exports and investment as key sources of economic growth.
The Chinese economy has many structural imbalances that will need to be addressed for sustainable growth to be maintained:

China will need to shift away from imitating/copying Western technologies to generating more innovation Increasing competitive challenges are coming from lower-unit cost countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico. Wages in the Chinese manufacturing sector have more than tripled since 2008.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. China has been pursuing a modernist vision of rapid economic development by implementing several policy variants.
From the 1950s up to the 1970s, China followed the Soviet model of development. Which meant that industrial production was solely in the hands of the central government whilst agricultural production was controlled by a network of rural collectives.
It was only in 1978 that China started to abandon the planned system and gradually returned to a more market-oriented economy. 1978 marked the beginning of a suite of economic reform policies known as Reform and Opening 改革开放 (gǎigé kāifàng).
Before the reforms, the Chinese economy was dominated by state ownership and central planning. From the 1950s up to the 1970s, Chinese real GDP per capita grew at a rate of only 2.9% per year on average and worse still Starting in 1970, the economy entered into a period of stagnation.
It was then after the death of Mao Zedong that the Communist Party leadership turned to market-oriented reforms to salvage the failing economy.

Also, most European young people are facing the highest unemployment since the ’70s, while many of those with a job are commonly known as the “working poor”. We still don’t know what the future consequences of this will be. But we can already see that this defining factor is changing a generation’s lifestyle and social habits (as we know them). Shared houses during adulthood, impossibility of getting a mortgage, migration. Owning a car (or not), getting married (or not), having children (or not): all of these things are now rapidly changing. And the EU Youth Guarantee programme seems to be ineffective. This session will consider these issues with journalists from Spain, Greece, UK, France and Italy.
