SEPARATING WORK FROM
PERSONAL SOCIAL MEDIA
It happens more times than most people realize.
You post something on your Facebook page
without realizing it has gone public. Perhaps it
was something harmless, but in the world of
business something that would be harmless to
one could be insulting to another, and in the
long run potentially harmful to your career.
Separation of work and social is a must these
days. Facebook has recently launched a new set
of tools meant to simplify your privacy matters.
Next we’ll run down each.
Privacy Menu Shortcut
By clicking on the new icon on the top section of
the toolbars (image of a lock), you can link
directly to your Privacy menu. From here you
can alter who can see you page, who can
contact you, as well as how to block those you
prefer not to have contact with.
Activity Log
The Privacy menu also includes an Activity Log.
The activity log allows you to view your most
recent posts. In addition, this section can now
be used to request a photograph be taken down
from a friend’s page. If your co-workers are
friends with others in your industry, this tool can
be used to eliminate photos you’d rather not
have those outside of your close circle view.
Search Engines

Facebook can be searched via a
search engine (such
as Google MSN, etc). To make
sure your profile is not
searchable make sure you turn
this option off.
Applications
Apps can accumulate on your Facebook page
without your knowledge. Under the Privacy
section there is a “Apps others use” section.
Make sure to uncheck all of the boxes in that
area to maintain privacy.
Ads
Under the ads settings, make sure to change
“Third Party Sites” and “Ads & Friends” to “No
One”. If you allow “Only my
Friends” Facebook has the availability to
combine your name and profile picture with
paid ads and show them to your friends list.
A good rule of socializing with co-workers online
is when in doubt; do not add somebody to your
personal profile. Even though you may be
friendly at work, you may not always agree upon
matters outside of the office.
