Realtime Analytics Using MongoDB, Python, Gevent, and ZeroMQRick Copeland
With over 180,000 projects and over 2 million users, SourceForge has tons of data about people developing and downloading open source projects. Until recently, however, that data didn't translate into usable information, so Zarkov was born. Zarkov is system that captures user events, logs them to a MongoDB collection, and aggregates them into useful data about user behavior and project statistics. This talk will discuss the components of Zarkov, including its use of Gevent asynchronous programming, ZeroMQ sockets, and the pymongo/bson driver.

CouchDB is a document database. It stores JSON objects with a few special field names. The _id field represents a unique identifier for a document. The _rev field is the revision marker for a document. The _rev field is used for Multi-Version Concurrency Control, a form of optimistic concurrency.
Service worker: discover the next web game changerSandro Paganotti
This talk aims to introduce the upcoming ServiceWorker technology, its basic functionalities, its lifecycle and its most common use cases. Then it moves to analyse in detail a less obvious implementation of this technology: how to create a wiki engine using ServiceWorker and IndexedDB.
For more than 10 years, developers have relied on Apache(R) CouchDB(TM) - a versatile and highly scalable open source database - to build apps for web, mobile and IoT platforms.
The release of CouchDB 2.0 in 2016 has generated even more interest in the freely available JSON database, which now includes clustering capabilities contributed from IBM Cloudant for high availability and performance.
Mango allows users to declaratively define and query Apache CouchDB indexes. Mango leverages Lucene not only to perform text search, but also to enable ad-hoc querying capabilities.
Accumulo Summit 2015: Zookeeper, Accumulo, and You [Internals]Accumulo Summit
Talk Abstract
Apache ZooKeeper plays a central role within the Accumulo architecture. Its quorum consistency model supports an overall Accumulo architecture with no single points of failure. Beyond that, Accumulo leverages ZooKeeper to store and communication configuration information for users and tables, as well as operational states of processes and tablets. For most Accumulo users, ZooKeeper is a black box full of goodness. Unfortunately, operational challenges mean we often have to delve into the dark depths to decipher what's going on when something goes wrong. In this talk, we will cover some basics about ZooKeeper's role, what it's good at and what it's not. Then we will discuss ways to debug what's stored inside of ZooKeeper, including how to overcome challenges with ZooKeeper's sometimes difficult ACL model.

OpenStack ran into a challenge: how do you balance the ability to evolve a REST API, with backwards compatibility guarantees, and have it work the same across different deployments, when you have no control over when they are going to upgrade. The answer we came up with was labeled "Microversions", inspired by HTTP content negotiation. This talk will dig into the challenges of versioning REST APIs, as well as the unique challenges of versioning ones that expect to exist in interoperable public clouds. It will dive through ideas that were tried and retired in OpenStack, and describe in depth the microversion system that many OpenStack services now use. We'll look at what's been learned in 2 years of this in the field, and suggest how related approaches might be applied to other open source projects.

Contract-driven development with OpenAPI 3 and Vert.x | DevNation Tech TalkRed Hat Developers
Have you ever been frustrated by developing and documenting an HTTP API? When it comes down to defining the HTTP interface between frontend and backend, have you ever had problems specifying the parameters or the shape of the body without misunderstandings? In this talk we’ll introduce you to "Contract Driven Development" (or API Design First approach), a methodology that uses declarative API Contracts to enable developers to efficiently design, communicate, and evolve their HTTP APIs, while automating API implementation phases where possible. In order to implement this methodology, we’ll show you how to develop an API contract using OpenAPI 3 and how you can easily implement the HTTP endpoints using Vert.x Web OpenAPI.

Automatisation in development and testing - within budgetDavid Lukac
Working on client projects with very strict budget and resource restrictions, tight deadlines and pressure, many times does not allow for full blown Test Driven Development, Continuous Delivery and other software engineering goodness we would love to have. We will show you easily accessible and quickly implementable options, that allow you to automate your development and testing process, or at least the most painful parts, without blowing the budget. Finally you can relax during deployments of the code to production! :-)

your infrastructure choices, you can make better choices in
development and get what you need in production.
You'll get an overview of fog and concrete examples to give you a head
start on your own provisioning workflow.

Deploy and Destroy: Testing Environments - Michael Arenzon - DevOpsDays Tel A...DevOpsDays Tel Aviv
One of the critical factors for development velocity is software correctness. Our ability to develop and ship new features fast is bounded by our ability to validate several aspects of the change: * Does the feature meet the requirements? * How does the feature affect existing code, and how can it affect the production environment? With continues codebase growth and new features being added, naturally our productivity decreases, and our need to improve the guarantees for quality and correctness increase.
In this talk, I’ll focus on testing environments: why developers need a self-serve platform to create a full functioning environment on-demand, how such environments should be managed, and how can one restore part of the lost velocity. I’ll cover an internal system we use at AppsFlyer called ‘Namespaces’ that addresses the issue with the help of Mesos / Marathon, Docker, Traefik, and Consul.

Burn down the silos! Helping dev and ops gel on high availability websitesLindsay Holmwood
HA websites are where the rubber meets the road - at 200km/h. Traditional separation of dev and ops just doesn't cut it.
Everything is related to everything. Code relies on performant and resilient infrastructure, but highly performant infrastructure will only get a poorly written application so far. Worse still, root cause analysis in HA sites will more often than not identify problems that don't clearly belong to either devs or ops.
The two options are collaborate or die.
This talk will introduce 3 core principles for improving collaboration between operations and development teams: consistency, repeatability, and visibility. These principles will be investigated with real world case studies and associated technologies audience members can start using now. In particular, there will be a focus on:
- fast provisioning of test environments with configuration management
- reliable and repeatable automated deployments
- application and infrastructure visibility with statistics collection, logging, and visualisation

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
