Maurice Sendak is considered one of the most important children's book authors. He was born in 1928 in Brooklyn and was inspired to become a children's book illustrator after meeting an editor at HarperCollins. His most famous work is Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963, which uses his signature dark, imaginative style that has resulted in some of his books being banned.
