2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Doing business in the USA (20 February, A3 KNT, speaker was Mrs. Kelly )
When digital becomes human (19 December, A3 KNT, speaker was a thought
leader on the future of marketing)
Cross generational marketing ( 21 November, aula strop, speaker was founder of
insites )
leadership(30 October, Ghent, Veerle Decleark )
Cryptocurrency ( 25 February, NH hotel, speaker from an investor from the uk)
3. why and own research about the topic
I decided to attend this seminar because of the popularity the USA has in terms of
business activities and as this was in line with the course goals of the international
business management course. Moreover, since the speaker happened to be my
teacher in courses like international business communication and international
business culture I thought it interesting to attend this seminar of hers as she
always told us she is a speaker and a trainer in cultural competence apart from
teaching. I jumped to the internet and read more over doing business in the USA
which to be honest was not very clear. One of my researches I made about this topic
that rendered me to asking for clarification on the day of the seminar was the
people in the states being highly contexted.
4. Summary
Like always the guest speaker Mrs. Kelly delivered an educative package which
opened my mind and also arose my interest for doing business in the states one day.
She was able to explain and reveled some unacceptable words , behaviors and signs
which could lead to complications. As she spoke I got to realize the USA had a bit in
common with my home culture. We had cultural similarities like masculinity and
competitiveness.
5. Reflection
The English level of Mrs. Kelly was very good. She made use of a very interesting
and colorful slides I capturing our attention which I though was a great idea. She
involved her audience by using some of us as actors to demonstrating some signs for
clarifications. In the end she made sure her information was passed across by a fun
and interesting quiz she made with Kahoot. I honestly paid attention to her
presenting skills and took a bit of it which I would use in my future career
6. Why and own research
I choose to attend this seminar because of the catchy topic. It was a very mind
reflecting and triggering topic in my view. Questions begun to shot across my mind
as I thought deeply about the topic. With these thought I hoped on to the internet
to research about the topic which lead to an interesting and reveling future, and
that was a future with minimal human effort, a future of automations and a future
of effectiveness and efficiency. After researching begun to ask myself about the
consequences of the outcomes and also about ethics.
7. Summary
Of course the seminar was perfectly in line with my research, it spoke about
artificial intelligence. Explaining more in details the evolution and effect and as
such positive ones that would be introduced as a result of this intelligence in.
contrast to the natural intelligence. The speaker also gave us some educative
measures and tips in approaching and coping with the future of AI. He also explain
the genesis of AI which emphasized on some dangers of the hailed future.
8. Reflection
The speaker showed so much interest in the seminar which was obvious not only
from his background being a thought leader on the topic but also from his tone and
presentation as a whole. This in my opinion was one of the best seminars I went to
because of the content and exposure the seminar gave me. He addressed my
questions I came across in his presentation which made me happy and also drew
my attention more deeper.
9. Why and research about topic
I really wanted to attend this seminar because it stroke my attention on social media.
Also everyone was talking about it and it seemed like the perfect event/opportunity to do
some networking and retrieve new and useful information regarding my internship
abroad. I was interested in hearing It looked like an inspiring topic. Before attending the
event I googled and read some articles on generational markerting . All this made me
decide to attend this event and his lecture.
10. Summary
The speaker also hinted on the future of AI in marketing, he then gave the
evolution of marketing from the door to door age through the use and importance of
social media in the new era. He then gave some possibilities that could be used in
capturing a large target audience apart from the use of regular posters and of
course bill boards. He wrapped up by challenging each of us to thinking outside the
box.
11. Reflection
First of all I thought the English level of the speaker was phenomenal. I knew he’s
Belgian (according to my research in advance) but really he sounded like a native
English speaker. The way he brought his message, his story was so inspiring; you could
see the passion for this subject matter in his eyes. In addition, he was very interactive
with the audience and even gave away books to the people who answered his
questions correctly. To top it all, there was free pizza during the seminar, so the party
was on.
12. Why and own research
the topic said it all. Its indeed a struggle to combine business these days with other
life related aspects. People spend all of their time in the office space which is sad to
see or hear about. As a result this caught my attention as I happen to be a
dedicated fitness guy. As I researched about the topic there was a whooping 89
percent of employees that admitted they hardly had time in bettering themselves
outside of work than thinking about work
13. Summary
The seminar was organized in gent by a group of business entrepreneurs in the
PHIT school for the purpose of educating the youth mainly student and intern
about the existing reality that has imprisoned most individuals already in the
working sector and to stress on the balance we need to seek before approaching a
job or vacancy. The speaker was a Belgian lady in the name of Veerle Decleark. She
gave most insight about the existing work to life experience and stressed on the
increasing amount of burn out as a result of multitasking.
14. Reflection
This was a great seminar that was communicated to me by a colleague in my Dutch
school. On that day I got to meet and socialize with other student also with the
focus on a foreign orientation. As the seminar went on I got encourage to plan my
student life now so as to help prepare me for the future of seeking a balance in my
future work life and my fitness life.
15. Why and research
I had the chance to meet an Indian pal through the IBM program who always
emphasized on the need to invest in the stock market and as such in the
cryptocurrency which he believed was the future of investment. He was indeed a
successful trader and as a matter of fact I got more curious to know about the
technicalities in trading thus rising my interest for this seminar.
16. Summary
Detailed information was given to us on how to start up an account online so as to
get started. Through real life instances and experiences, quality information was
passed across by the speaker. A little bit of banking and finance was passed across
which lead to the introduction of the stock markets also. Application used to check
on the market was given by the speaker.
17. Reflection
My perception on the stock market changed and got validated, I was able to open an
account which has already gone a long way in earning me some profit. The speaker
spoke in an enthusiastic way in which was one of the convincing part to me. In a
nut shell I had a great time as I socialized with other student in the same focus and
vision.
