Self-inflating tires are designed to constantly maintain proper tire pressure by detecting when pressure drops in a tire, notifying the driver, and inflating the tire back to the proper level. Research shows that over a quarter of passenger vehicles and a third of light trucks have at least one underinflated tire by more than 25%, resulting in billions wasted in fuel costs annually. Near 10,000 injuries could be prevented each year if all vehicles had tire pressure monitoring systems. Self-inflating systems work using a central tire inflation system, peristaltic pump, or similar technology to automate tire inflation and optimize performance, safety, and fuel efficiency.
