What is Sense?
Sense does not take care of objects in
the real world.
Sense deals with the relationships
inside the language.
Consider this extract from
Wiktionary’s entry on plane:
1. An airplane; an aeroplane
2. A level or flat surface
3. A level of existence or development.
Sense deals with intra-linguistic
relationships “semantic relationships”
— One of the semantic relationship is
“sameness of meaning in words,
phrases or sentences” more than one
word can have the same sense.
The sense of an expression is its
place in a system of semantic
relationships with other
expressions in the language.
Example:
A chair is a piece of
furniture with a raised
surface used to sit on.

Sense refers to how we see an
object or the amount of
information given about an
object.
Rule: Every expression that
has meaning has sense, but
NOT every expression has
reference.
